Working with Layers

• Initially, a Photoshop image consists of a single
  layer or background
• Additional layers can be added to the image and
  are transparent
• Until they are combined or merged, each layer
  remains independent of the others
• Each layer can be edited, blended and
  repositioned without disturbing the others
• Working with layers is analogous to placing
  portions of a drawing on sheets of acetate

• Auto Levels
• often provides sufficient adjustment for a poorly
  scanned image
• detects brightest and darkest pixels and setting
  them to pure white and black, respectively
• can greatly improve contrast in dark or shadowy
  images

• allows you to manually change the levels of white
  and black throughout the image's tonal range
• to adjust middle tones, move the middle triangle
  (Midtones)

Healing Brush Patch Tool

• Removes artefacts such as dust, scratches,
  blemishes, and wrinkles
• automatically preserves shading, lighting,
  texture, and other attributes when cloning
  within one image or from one image to another
• Use the Patch Tool for precise control when
  working with selections
• use any of the basic selection tools to define
  selection
• PhotoShop automatically heals the area defined
  while matching lighting and shading of the
  sampled pixels to the source pixels
• Use on a layer copy and then blend opacity to
  produce a more natural effect

Toning Tools

• Consist of the dodge and burn tools
• Used to lighten or darken areas of the image, the
  dodge and burn tools are based on a traditional
  photographer's technique for regulating exposure
  on specific areas of a print
• Photographers hold back light to lighten an area
  on the print (dodging) or increase the exposure
  to darken areas on a print (burning)
