Title: You have TWO EARS and only one mouth Why

1
Journal
  • You have TWO EARS and only one mouth!! Why??

2
Why is Habit 5 key to communication?
  • Most of us talk to much and listen to little
  • Most of us use talking as our primary means of
communication, even though the stats tell us
    differently.
  • Most of us dont know how to listen, because we
are more concerned about ourselves than others

3
Communication Stats
  • 7 Habits
  • 53 of communication is body language
  • 40 is tone
  • 7 is actual words that you say

4
The deepest need of humans!!
  • To be understood
  • We want others to appreciate who we are, what we
are doing, where we have been, what we value,
    etc.
  • We are all unique, one-of a kind, individuals

5
How can we be understood?
  • To be understood, we must first learn to
    understand.
  • To run, you must first learn to walk
  • To read, you must first learn the letters
  • How do learn to understand?
  • LISTEN
  • Most of us dont know how to listen!

6
Five Poor Listening Styles
When people talk we seldom listen because were
usually too busy preparing a response, judgment,
or filtering their words.
7
Spacing Out
  • When someone is talking to us but we ignore them
because our mind is wandering off in another
galaxy! We are so caught up in our own thoughts.

8
Pretend Listening
  • We are still not paying much attention to the
other person but we pretend we are by making
insightful comments at key junctions, such as
    yeah, uh-huh, cool, sounds great.
  • The speaker will get the hint and feel unimportant

9
Selective Listening
  • This is where we pay attention to only the part
of the conversation that interests us. We than
talk about something that has nothing to do with
    the original conversation!

10
Word Listening
  • This occurs when we actually pay attention to
what someone is saying, but we listen only to the
words, not the body language, the feelings, or
the true meaning behind the words.

11
Self-Centered Listening
  • When we see everything from our point of view.
Instead of standing in other peoples shoes, we
want them to stand in ours.
  • Example Oh, I know exactly how you feel.and
    you dont!
  • This is often a game of one-upmanship
  • Example You think youre day was bad, You should
    hear what happened to me!

12
When we are self-centered listeners we often
judge, advise and probe
  • JUDGE
  • You are judging, not listening
  • ADVISE
  • Advise from our experience, instead of just
    listening
  • PROBE
  • Try to dig up emotions, dont interrogate.
    Listen when they are ready
