4UNITED STATES NAVAL ACADEMY - AEROSPACE
ENGINEERING
- Four year undergraduate program graduating 1000
per year with commissions in Navy, Marine Corps,
and allied military services. - Approximately 40 of graduating class are
engineers all majors including 50 hours of
science and engineering - Aerospace graduates 60/year, most of whom go
into Naval Aviation as pilots and weapon system
operators. - After six years of operational experience, many
Aerospace grads will attend test pilot school. - Grads dominate Astronaut Office, Naval Air
Systems Command, NASA and major industry
leadership (Boeing, Northrop Grumman and Lockheed
Martin)
5USNA-CDIO MOTIVATION
- USNA Aerospace moving haphazardly towards
CDIO-like program before hearing of CDIO - Design/Build/Fly
- Small Satellite Program
- CDIO provides an framework for systematic
development and expansion of activities.
6USNA CONTRIBUTIONS
- Graduates are Operators of advanced technology
systems - - the program has operational orientation
- Fundamentally grant a leadership degree in the
context of engineering - Developed assessment effort and expertise

Educational Development, CDM
Lars Hein, Department of Mechanical Engineering,
MEK
10CDM THEMES
- consulting services and advice to departments and
groups of teachers - seminars and ad hoc courses
- courses in pedagogic for teachers and
Ph.D.-students - projects of special relevance to the development
of teaching at DTU
11DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING
The Department contributes to the basic and
higher levels of education in the fields of
mechanics, advanced design tools, product
development, energy systems and marine
technology. It is responsible for essential parts
of the Mechanical Engineering line of the BSc
program, and for coordination of the preliminary
four-semester programs in Mechanical Engineering
and Energy Technology and of the study fields of
Energy and of Design and Mechanics for the MSc
program at DTU.

18CURRENT ISSUES RESTRUCTURING A MECHANIC
ENGINEERING CURRIULUM
- Basically DTU has two parallel educational
programmes - A five years programme giving a M.Sc. degree
- A three-and-a-half year programme giving a B.
Eng. degree. - The M.Sc. programme is intended to attract
theoretically strong students. - The B.Eng. programme is directed towards more
practically oriented students. - The staff responsible for the M.Sc. curriculum is
research based. - The staff responsible for the B.Eng. curriculum
is currently teaching-only staff.
19CURRENT ISSUES RESTRUCTURING THE MECHANIC
ENGINEERING CURRIULUM
- Both programmes are objects for renewal. Due to
changes, so that all staff in the future will be
research based, the programme for the B.Eng. is
now reengineered and the new curriculum will be
launched September 2003. - The M.Sc. curriculum is planned to be renewed and
launched by September 2004. - The new M.Sc. curriculum must consist of a three
years B.Sc. programme plus a two years M.Sc.
programme.

21A HETEROGENOUS ENGINEERING COMPETANCE
Innovative Socio-technical competencies
Competencies in creativity synthesis
- Highly project oriented Every semester, 1 10,
has its project activities. - Teaching of engineering subjects integrated into
the projects. - Students, in families of 15, have a permanent
working space a base. - Final projects combines synthesis orientation
with hardcore campus technology from other
departments.
Reflective technological engineering competencies
22THREE DIFFERENT EDUCATIONAL PRODUCTS ..
23... FROM ONE PRODUCTION SYSTEM !
24THE THREE TASKS
25CDIO FROM A DTU PERSPECTIVE
- How shall we use the recursive nature of CDIO?
- Documented effects of various stages of CDIO?
- How to set up a measuring system at an early
stage? - How to manage the shift in paradigm ?
- CDIO Help us to go from teaching to learning
- How to get staff involvement in CDIO-teaching ?
- How to involve industry and professionals ?
- IPU Its role in CDIO learning and proof of
success ? - ...
26MOTIVATION TO JOIN THE CDIO PARTNERSHIP
- We have a number of major education renewal tasks
at the DTU ... - We need the focus ...
- We need the dialogue ...
- We need to know about tips and tricks
- We need to move towards a more scientific and
research oriented approach to education
development
27DTU CONTRIBUTION
- Experience in educational paradigm changes, in
assessment, and in the application of didactics
and methodology, at the Centre for Engineering
Educational Development. - Experience from a newly established, Design
innovation education - heavily focused on synthesis and C-D-I-O
- with a new approach to the teaching of
engineering basics integrated INTO the projects - with a focus on innovative Socio-technical
competencies. - Amble ground for the testing of starter kit,
self-certification, IRMs
