Title: The Flock : Mote Sensors Sing in Undergraduate Curriculum

1
The Flock Mote Sensors Sing in Undergraduate
Curriculum
  • Dae Young Jeong
  • Supercomputing Lab.
  • Yonsei Univ.

2
Introduction
  • Educational excellence requires exposing students
to the current edge of research.
  • UW CSE have integrated the emerging field of
    wireless sensor networks into undergraduate
    computer engineering curriculum.
  • Flock of Birds embedded systems project
integrates the theory and practice of wireless
    sensor networks into curriculum.

A mote-sensor bird
4
A Flock of Birds
  • A simple distributed system with combini-ng sound
generation in an ad hoc network.
  • Use timers, radio communication, and direct
manipulation of hardware registers for sound
    production.

5
Hardware Software
  • Atmel Atmega AVR-series microprocessor
  • AVR-GCC C compiler
  • Crossbow Mica2Dot platform
  • TinyOS (event-based OS)

6
Course Work Procedure
Breadboard basics
Motes and TinyOS
Concert exam
  • compile programs with AVR-GCC and upload them to
    ATmega16 processor on a breadboard.
  • implement the flock algorithm in tinyOS.
    (event-driven programming)
  • Two-hour concert of 50 motes in atrium.

7
Goals and simplified algorithm for each bird in
the flock.
8
Conclusion
  • The project concluded with a concert in the
atrium consisting of 50 bird motes that sang
songs based on what other birds within radio
    range were singing.

9
In The Future
  • The sound quality of the piezoelectric
transducers was not exactly high fidelity.
  • Light sensors Proximity sensors
  • Rechargeable batteries power management

10
In UC Davis
  • Implement a simple sensor networking data
collection application using the Ember network
    hardware, Crossbow motes, TinyOS, NesC.
  • Explore the tradeoff between power efficiency and
    ability.

11
In TecO
  • Smart-Its provide sensors for collecting light,
    pressure, temperature, acceleration, and audio
    information.
