Team 1089 FRC Robot Design 101
  • Mercury Team 1089
  • What is an idea?
  • What does 'design' mean here?
  • How do we design the robot?
  • When you have completed a design you have....?
  • Propose a design project
  • Close and Review

2
What am I going to cover?
  • Why do we need to design?
  • Where does design fit in to the build season?
  • Where does the design information come from?
  • Quick introduction to FRC Robot Design

3
What I am not going to cover
  • Gripes and complaints
  • The old way
  • Engineering
  • Programming
  • Sensors
  • BUILD

4
Build Season Overview
  • Design
  • Review the rules
  • Come up with a game strategy
  • Figure out what the robot will have to do
  • Figure out how the robot will do it
  • Submit design for Mechanical Engineering review
  • Submit design for Software Engineering review
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Software Engineering
  • Build
  • TEST, TEST, TEST

5
What is an idea?
  • An idea is a form (such as a thought) formed by
    the consciousness (including mind)?
  • idea (n.) Something, such as a thought or
conception, that potentially or actually exists
in the mind as a product of mental activity.
  • A doodle.
  • An idea is basic.
  • An idea is abstract.
  • A dream.

6
What does 'design' mean here?
  • 'To design' refers to the process of originating
and developing a plan for a product, structure,
    system, or component.
  • To us, 'design' is the plan to create the robot.
It includes hardware and software and more...
  • How to build the dream.

7
How do we design the robot?
  • We can get some important information about the
design from the rules. (size, weight, height
    limits, etc.)?
  • Analyze the game and determine a strategy for
    each part.
  • Break the strategy into a list of functions that
    the robot needs to complete.
  • Evaluate the 'pros' and 'cons' of each element in
    the design.
  • Evaluate the feasibility of each element in the
    design.

8
When you have completed a design you have ....?
  • Instructions for the Mechanical Engineers to
    create the physical robot
  • Instructions for the Software Engineers to
    control and move the robot
  • A point of reference to evaluate other options.
  • A benchmark to tell you when you have
    successfully completed the 'build'

9
Propose a design project
  • I propose that we as a team, including all
committees and groups, design with the intention
to build a robot for the FRC 2004 season.
  • The scope of this project would likely lead up to
Mechanical Engineering 101 and the build of a
    prototype robot base.

10
Close Review
  • What is the difference between and idea and
    design?
  • How do we start the design process?
  • What do you have when you complete the design?
  • The design project
  • QUESTIONS?
