Title: Integrating science with Humanities and Liberal Arts

1
Integrating science with Humanities and Liberal
Arts
  • By Nita Soni
  • ELED 305
  • Section 42

2
What is science?
  • It is a process of gaining knowledge based on
making repeated observations about nature in
controlled conditions and attempting to explain
    what causes those observation through
constructing hypotheses that can be tested
    experimentally.

3
In short what is Science?
  • The study of natural world through
  • Observation
  • Identification
  • Description
  • Experimental investigation and
  • Theoretical explanations.

4
What is Humanities?
  • The branch of learning that connects-
  • Fine arts
  • Languages
  • Music
  • History
  • Literature and religion

5
What is Liberal Arts?
  • The studies( as language, philosophy,
mathematics, history and literature) in the
school and college or university intended to
provide chiefly general knowledge and to develop
    the general intellectual capacities.

6
Integrated Science and Humanities
  • Provides memorable science learning and
challenging creativity for students in elementary
    classroom
  • Provides hands on and minds on activity, and
    collaboration learning
  • Interesting learning and teaching

7
Standards
  • Illinois State Board of Education Standards (
    ISBE)
  • National Science Education Standards
  • ( NSES)
  • National science Teachers Association Standards(
    NSTA)

8
ISBE
  • 13.b
  • Know and apply concept that describe the
    interaction between science, technology and
    society.
  • 13.b.2b
  • 13.b. 2c

9
NSTA
  • 2.1.2b
  • Involves students regularly in comparing and
contrasting scientific and non scientific ways of
knowing integrates criteria of science in
    investigations and case studies.

10
NSES
  • Unifying concept and process in science
  • Multidisciplinary perspective increase from the
subject-matter standards to the standard on the
history and nature of science, providing many
    opportunities for integrated approaches to
    science teaching.

11
Integrating Science with Language Arts
  • In the elementary science classroom, students can
use literature to verify prediction, confront and
    correct their misconception about science.
  • They can make inferences.
  • Science books and students

12
Integrating science with music
  • Whether music is designed for popular enjoyment
or specifically for education, has a value in
    science teaching.
  • Tone color and sound production enhance science
skill such as vibration, sound, and basic
    physiology.
  • Also the teachers can show their own open
expression and enthusiastic wonder about the
intricate detail in nature to make their students
    excite about nature.

13
Integrating science with Art
  • Arts and science has a natural connection.
  • Museum-grade art works are very useful in science
    education.
  • Modern art form, craftwork and students
construction can be useful in science education.
  • The visual arts are an excellent way to
supplement instruction in science and other
    subjects in elementary classroom.

14
Integrating science with history
  • Development of any country
  • The movement of the people and culture
  • Innovations

15
Discussion
  • Curriculum integration is not a new idea
  • Good science can be enhanced and enlivened,
integrated with curriculum areas, and made more
    relevant for the students
  • It is a procedure associated with inquiry,
    problem solving, and decision making

16
  • Questions?
