Title: Clean ICE

1
Clean ICE
  • Advisor Dr. ZieherMembers Hai Chang, Kyle
    Roosevelt

2
Project Description
  • Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine
  • A small gasoline motor is converted to run on H2
and O2. The motor is controlled by an MSP430 and
it is mounted in a cage for safety. The exhaust
of the motor is theoretically clean, only water
    vapor.

3
Project Goals
  • Get the engine running better
  • Build on previous work
  • Improve engine control software
  • Make power measurements
  • Improve engine power and performance through
    experimentation

4
Accomplishments
  • Reproduced old results
  • Relocated the injector board
  • Mounted generator to engine
  • Coupled the shafts with a flexible coupling
  • Modified heat lamp array to work as a variable
    load
  • Added safety cage extension
  • Added Hardware to measure load current and
    voltage
  • Added Temperature sensor

5
Accomplishments
  • Added data logging function to Labview
  • Added code for MSP to measure load and sense
    voltages
  • Added additional code for serial communication of
    voltage measurements
  • Expanded LabView functionality to calculate
    horsepower and torque
  • Made Matlab code to graph results from logged data

Injector Board Box
8
Variable Resistor Specification
  • Array of ceramic heat lamp
  • The resistance across each lamp at room temp is
    28.5 Ohms
  • Each row has a switch to turn it On/Off

9
Shaft Alignment
  • X A B
  • A L1 d1/2
  • B L2 d2/2
  • Where d1 5/8 (in) and d2 7/8 (in)

10
Lab Measurements
11
  • A 4.1365 (in)
  • B 3.5170 (in)
  • X A B 0.6195 (in)

12
Shaft Coupling
  • From Grainger
  • Compatible with both shaft sizes
  • Engine 5/8
  • Generator 7/8
  • Rubber insert provides a weak point in case of
    overload

17
Thermal Coupler
  • Specs
  • It will provide accurate surface temperature
    measurements from 40 to 500 deg. F.
  • Maximum temperature of insulation is 500 deg

MSP code
  • Inputs
  • Crankshaft Angle
  • LabView values for ignition and injection timings
    and pulse widths
  • Outputs
  • Hydrogen and Oxygen Injectors
  • Ignition Coil
  • RPM, Load and sense voltage to LabView

21
Changes to MSP code
  • Setup A to D converter for Load and Sense voltage
    measurement
  • Problems
  • AVss was not grounded
  • 12 bit to 8 bit conversion was incorrect
  • Added additional parts to serial port transmit
    interrupt
  • Load Voltage
  • Sense Voltage
  • 2 extra values for future use

22
Serial Port Interface
  • LabView initiates transfer by writing values to
    the MSP serial port buffer
  • Identifier (gt245)
  • Data Value (lt245)
  • Termination Character (245)
  • MSP executes interrupt when receive buffer fills
  • If RXBUF gt 245 RXBUF Identifier
  • If RXBUF lt 245 RXBUF Data Value
  • If RXBUF 245 Execute switch statement

25
Data Logging
  • Record Engine parameters (6)
  • RPM
  • Ignition timing
  • Hydrogen injection timing
  • Hydrogen injection pulse width
  • Oxygen injection timing
  • Oxygen injection pulse width
  • All 6 parameters are recorded at 1 sample/second
  • The log captures values returned from the MSP-not
    from the LabView front panel
