What is temperature?

• Temperature is a way to measure how hot or cold
  it is. The tilt of the planet Earth makes the
  seasons, thus the big temperature changes in
  Illinois. Little temperature changes are caused
  by air masses that are either hot or cold.

• Highest temperature in Illinois 117 degrees F
• Coldest temperature in Illinois -36 degrees F

How Temperature affects us

• Extreme temperatures
• Very cold- 18 people die annually in Illinois
• Very hot- 36 people die annually in Illinois
• In Chicago 525 people die from the heat in 1995.

What are natural disasters and how do they affect
us in Illinois?

• Natural disasters are destructive forces of
  nature that occur naturally.
• In Illinois, there are tornadoes, drought,
  floods, and severe thunderstorms that cause great
  damage.
• Tornadoes are rotating funnel clouds which touch
  the ground which causes the greatest damage in
  Illinois.

• Average number of tornadoes in Illinois 27.
  Tornado Season mid March-June.

Floods in Illinois

• Riverine flooding is when a channel floods.
• Overbank flooding is when a stream, river, or
  creek overflows.

• Floods are caused by water overflowing from small
  bodies of water. Most are minor, but some can be
  major.
• In Illinois, there is riverine floods and
  overbank flooding.

What are weather patterns?
How do weather patterns affect us?

• Weather patterns are air masses and storms that
  give us different kinds of weather when they
  change position.

Wind Wind is moving air.
Wind Clouds

• Clouds Clouds are collections of tiny
  precipitation droplets in the sky.
• Different types of clouds form from the different
  ways that water vapor cools.

Precipitation The droplets of water that fall
from the sky from clouds. Precipitation can be
in the form of rain, sleet, hail, or snow.
Precipitation Drought

• Water Cycle The recycling process for water
  includes evaporation from the ground, then
  condensation inside clouds, then the falling of
  precipitation, leading to evaporation again.
• Drought When an area does not receive enough
  precipitation over a period of time. Illinois is
  now experiencing a moderate drought (it has
  rained less than two inches so far in June).

Future ClimateOver time, the weather of a place
always changes. The following is what is
predicted for the future climate of Illinois

• A rise of temperature 7-17 degrees
• Reduction of groundwater recharge
• A decrease in the level of water in lakes
• People will take more water from the lake (an
  increase in extraction pressure)
• More water borne diseases
• More days with ozone alert

Weather at Project Explore

• Summary- Very Hot and Very Dry with bad air
  quality.
• Precipitation- Weve had only 5 hundredths of an
  inch of rain in the three weeks at Project
  Explore.
• Temperature- 12 days were over 80 degrees, and at
  least 7 days were over 90 degrees. It has been
  the 2nd hottest June on record for Illinois.
• Air Quality- On a scale, 101-150 on the air
  quality index is unhealthy for people. This
  Monday we were at 146. Thats not very good.
