Work experience
Project
Sian approached a local primary school head
teacher and asked if they would be interested in
some murals in the playground. Sian saw this as a
great subject for her project and asked that she
could approach it in a formal client/artist
relationship. The head prepared an initial brief,
which she then developed ideas around, exploring
other opportunities which had not been initially
considered. This included the use of sculptures
to add extra effect. Once the end outcome had
been agreed, Sian recorded the details and set
about preparing a budget and timetable for the
commission, selecting appropriate materials,
techniques and technologies to create the desire
effect. At this stage Sian produced a visual
image of a small section of what the wall would
look like once decorated, via computer software,
so that the head teacher could appreciate its
aesthetic appeal. Sian suggested that a selection
of pupils from the school should also view the
design so that their views could be taken into
account and incorporated if possible. She
arranged this and was amazed at their perception
and obvious appreciation of what was tying to be
achieved. Their views were collated and
incorporated in an amended design.
Sian spent her work experience with a visual
merchandising company, which specialised in both
retail and events. Sian spent the first week with
the retail team who were designing a temporary
window display for the grand opening of a home
interior store. Sian then was asked to assist
with the planning of a roll-out campaign the
client being a well known fashion outlet. She
felt as though all her creativity could come out
at once and got fully involved in team briefings
and creative sessions. Her second week was just
as stimulating, this time spent with the events
team. They had been commissioned to dress a venue
for a forthcoming end of season stage play party,
and were working to a tight deadline. Sian
researched and sourced materials, and recommended
those suppliers who could provide the materials
quickly and for a good price.

Progression route Sian was still undecided which
career to take but was drawn to an advertisement
for a trainee graphic designer with a graphic
design company. She applied and got the job,
especially pleased to hear that a considerable
amount of on job training came with the post and
that she could attend university on a day release
course to further her development.
