5To receive a high School diploma in California,
all students must
- Pass the High School Exit Exam
- Complete Algebra 1
- Complete 40 hours of
- Community Service
6How can you tell if your student is on track to
meet these requirements?
- Check his/her STAR scores.
- Grades in all classes especially English and
Math. - Check his/her score on the Writing Assessment
Test.
Where can you find scores? Which grades count?
7The Bank of High School Credits
- In order to graduate, students must earn 230
credits total in their 4 years of high school. - Each course taken and passed is worth 5 credits.
Students take 6 classes per semester, and each
school year has 2 semesters. This equals 60
credits per year. - In 4 years of high school, there are 240 credits
possible.
8Ds and Fs in High School
- Fs earn no credit. The course would need to be
re-taken in order to graduate, usually in summer
school. - Ds will be awarded 5 credits, BUT in math, a
student cannot move to the next level with a
grade less than a C.

- In acceptance considerations, non-academic
activities are accounted for. Schools like to
see a well rounded student. Below are some
activities they look for. - Essay - U.C.s and Private schools take into
account the background of the student, including
any hardships the student or family has
encountered. The essay is a perfect place to

26California Community College
- Important Note
- Any course work done at the community college
must be reported to any college you are planning
to attend. Therefore, if a student takes courses
at a community college those transcripts must be
submitted with the college application. If this
is not done the application is considered
incomplete and could result in the student not
being admitted.

residency to his/her math teacher no later than
Friday, March 7th .
