How Does a Cam-lock Work?
  • A Cam-lock consists of two parts- an adapter and
    a coupler.
  • To connect, slide outwards the clamps on the
    coupler, and fix the adapter into coupler while
    considering their sizes. Once both halves are
    firmly fixed, close both clamps at the same time.
    Closing both clamps at the same time ensures that
    the seal is tightly assembled for safe transfer
    of liquids because the adapter is pulled down
    consistently.
  • To disconnect, depressurize the hose assembly
    first and then reverse the process.

How to Measure the Dimensions of Cam-lock?
  • For a flawless cam-lock fitting, it is important
    to take precise measurements. Measuring a
    metallic cam-lock fitting is simple. The hose
    tails measurements define the cam-lock size.
    Whatever the size of hose tail is, that would
    become measurement of cam-lock coupling.
  • Polypropylenes measurement is bit different,
    because the head sizes of each manufacturer vary
    and they do not have any international standard.
    There are variations in measured size and the
    fitted body. Generally, cam couplings are

    head, or the Inside Diameter of the coupler.

    known as STAMPED. In Stamped, S is for Size, T
    for Temperature, A for Application, M for
    Material/media, P for Pressure rating, E for End

What is the Standard for Cam-locks manufacturing?
  • The standard for groove couplings is Mil-C-27487,
    US military specification, now replaced with
    A-A-59326D. Both standards are compatible, which
    allows interchangeability of couplings using the
    same specification. The Mil-C-27487 standard was
    based on materials, tolerances, inspection
    procedures, casting methods, dimensions, and

European Standard
  • Approved by The European standard, EN 14420-7 is
    applied to cam groove couplings. It is
    manufactured as per American military standard
    discussed above. The hose connection does not
    follow this standard it is only applicable to
    the coupling.

Can Cam-locks be interchanged?
  • The cam groove couplings can be interchanged
    between different manufacturers. However, these
    sizes cannot be accommodated- ½ (12.5mm), 5 and
    8. Because of different versions of cam Groove
    in the market, A-A-59326A Mil Specification does
    not apply to 5 and 8.

What Are the Limitations of Using Cam-locks in
Assemblies?
  • At times, the hose shanks with rough edges are
    hard to connect with ferrule or sleeve. An effort
    to fit them together can permanently damage the
    hose, by cutting into the inner wall of the hose.
    This can cause leakage or hose failure. Also, Cam
    Groove couplings cannot be used for steam or
    compressed air applications.

Why you Need High Quality Cam-locks
  • Although, there are many manufacturers of
    cam-locks out there, but not all of them
    Specialty lock manufacturers. This becomes even
    more complicated if both halves of the coupler
    are from different manufacturers. This problem
    does not arise for North American or European
    manufacturers because they follow accepted
    certified specification rigidly.
