• There are some basic principles that apply for
  any grantno matter what their requirements are
  and their application form looks like.

• It is the organization money. You need to play to
  its interest.
• Make sure you follow the organizations
  guidelines exactly. Dont use a proposal for more
  than one funding source.
• Give an accurate budget. Dont pad but ask for
  what you need.
• Write well.

• If you are short and to the point, and youve
  answered the key questions, your grant will be
  viewed as comprehensive and fundable.
• First impressions are important. Catchy name?
• Good writing should be easy to read, understand,
  and should present your ideas in an exciting, yet
  specific manner.

• Show in your proposal that youre aware of who
  has done similar projects.
• Tell the ongoing benefits.
• Have measurable outcomes.
• Limit your proposal to . . . .attainable goals.

• How well does the applicant state the research
  question?
• Does the applicant know what and where the
  essential primary sources are?
• Does the applicant know the basic secondary
  literature on the subject?
• How is the project different than what other
  researchers have worked on?

  research be used?
• Has the applicant accurately estimated the cots?
• How did the applicant determine the costs
  (internet search, calls to airlines/hotels, etc.)

• Title
• A description of the proposed research question
• A summary of the projects relationship to the
  Intermountain West.
• A description of the primary sources available
  and where they are located.

• A description of what makes this study unique.
• A summary of the planned use of the research.
• A detailed budget relating expenses to steps in
  the research program.
