Title: Section III: Chapters 2944
1Section III Chapters 29-44
Basic Theology, Charles Ryrie
Before We Start
- Hand in your comprehension question responses.
- Write down the memory verse for this week and
hand it in.
2Origins A Biblical Perspective
- Remember the Bible is not a science text book,
but it is accurate
- Some Suppositions
- Faith Because the first man was placed in an
already existing universe, we must go on faith to
understand the origin of the universe. - By faith we understand that the universe was
formed at Gods command, so that what is seen was
not made out of what was visible. Hebrews 113 - Facts Because of the previous understanding, the
only absolute facts about creation are found in
the Bible. All other understanding is
theoretical and cannot be accepted as absolute.
- In the beginning God created the heavens and the
earth. Genesis 11 - The name of God in this verse is Elohim
- The Strong One, Mighty Leader, Supreme
Deity - Refutes the following ideas
- Atheism There is a god, and He is God
- Polytheism There is only one god, and He is God
- Pantheism God is not separate from His creation
Chapter 30
3Origins A Biblical Perspective
Question 1 What is meant by the phrase Creatio
Ex Nihilo?
- Is Timing Everything?
- Ussher used Biblical clues to date creation back
to 4004BC, while scientists have used methods to
date the creation back to 4,500,000,000BC.
The Gap Concept seeks to bring harmony to
Biblical creation time and geological time
gaps first popularized by Thomas Chalmers in
1814. In between Genesis11 and 12, Satan
rebelled, brought sin into the world, and led to
the destruction of all that was created thus far
(plants and possibly animals) and an ice
age. Support Genesis 12 the earth became
without form and void because of the judgment on
Satans rebellion. Genesis 128 replenish the
earth indicates that the earth was once
inhabited with something. Refute Use of the
words replenish and refill are incorrect
translations of the actual Hebrew. Also, there
is no proof that Satans rebellion led to
judgment on the earth. The first judgment on the
earth came from the fall.
Solar Days v. Ages seeks to bring harmony to
biblical length of creation against geological
aging of earth. Solar Days throughout the
Pentateuch, the word day denotes a solar day.
Why would Genesis 1 be any different? Also, the
usage of morning and evening with the days of
creation add to this idea. Exodus 2011 God sets
an example Himself using days as days. Ages
Genesis 24 Because this doesnt specify days as
Chapter 1 did, it is open to have occurred in
longer periods of time. If the sun was not
created until the forth day, there is no way to
attribute creation completely to solar day
cycles. 2 Peter 38 Peter declares a day is like
a thousand years to God.
Burden of proof falls on anyone who wants to look
outside of the Bible. They most find undeniable
proof for that belief.
Chapter 30
4Man
- The Characteristics of Mans Creation
- It was planned by God (Genesis 126)
- It was Direct, Special, and Immediate (Genesis
127 - It involved 2 Facets
- Made in His Image
- Corporeal View
- The Non-Corporeal View
- Combination View
- The Roman Catholic View
- Neo Orthodox View
What does it matter? Because Gods breath an
essence gives us life, we did not lose His image
at the fall, or we would cease to exist. Also,
NT relates Man as head of the family as God is
Head.
Chapter 31
5Man
- How is Mans Being Transmitted?
- Preexistence In the beginning all the souls that
are in creation existed. They through various
incarnations and in the process become sinful. - Creationism God creates the soul of a being at
the moment of conception and unites it with the
body. This being is sinful not because of the
soul, but the inherited guilt of the body - But Moses and Aaron fell facedown and cried out,
O God of the spirits of all mankind, will you be
angry with the entire assembly when only one man
sins? Exodus 1614 - Transducianism The soul of a man is transferred
with the body in the process of generation.
Hebrews 710. Also, since the notion of man is
both physical and psychical, it makes sense that
both are growing at the same time.
Chapter 31
6Man
Question 2 What is meant by Bipartite Unity?
- The Immaterial Man
- The Soul the life of man. Can refer to both
the whole of man, as well as only the immaterial.
Some say that this was what God breathed into
Adam. Also the source of mans emotions such as
- Symapthy (Job 3025)
- Despair (Psalms 435)
- Bitterness (2Kings 427)
- Love (Song of Solomon 17)
- Tends to be the primary focus of Redemption
(James 121, 1Peter 8-9) - The Spirit refers only to the immaterial. All
men are born with spirits (Hebrews 129), but man
only receives the Holy Spirit upon Salvation.
Also said to be center of activities such as - Thinking (Isaiah 2924)
- Jealousy (Number 514)
- Contriteness (Psalms 3418)
- Pauline thought places it at the center of
spiritual life. - The Heart most often referrenced in the Bible to
denote the inner man - Intellectual Life Consideration (Deut 85),
Knowledge of the Word (Psalms 11911), Thoughts
and Intentions (Hebrews 412) - Emotional Life Love (Deut 65), Self-Reproach
(Job 276), Desire (Psalms 374) - Spiritual Life Righteousness (Rom 109-10), Path
to the Father (1Pet 315)
Chapter 32
7Man
- The Immaterial Man
- The Conscience a witness inside of man who
tells him what he should do, and what he ought
not do. It does not teach us right from wrong,
but reminds us what we have already learned to be
right and wrong. The notion only appears in NT - Respect the government which he lives under
(Romans 135) - Bear up under an unjust employer (1Peter 218-19)
- Requires respect when the conscience of one
denies him what is afforded to another (1Cor
87-12) - The Mind used for perceiving, understanding,
feeling, and determining. The unbelievers mind
is blinded (2Cor 44) and darkened (Ephesians
418). Is central to spiritual life - Understanding Truth (Luke 2425)
- Deciding Doubtful Things (Romans 145)
- Pursuing Holiness (Ephesians 517)
- Loving the Lord (Matthew 2237)
- The Flesh referring to the sinful part of man,
inclined to turn from God. Both believer and
unbeliever have this aspect. - The Will the Bible focuses more on Gods will,
rather than mans, but acknowledges that man can
will to do both right and/or wrong.
Chapter 32
8Man, The Fall, and Sin
The Fall of Man A Myth, An Allegory, or a
History?
- The Fall as a Myth It is merely a legend that is
passed on from generation to generation. There
is no way to have an accurate account of what
happened and the story itself is meant for
religious and moral purposes. - The Fall as an Allegory The story itself
represents mans fall from grace and the
progession towards sin, but in itself has no
factual basis. The events are meant to express
the overall idea. - The Fall as a History The story told in Genesis
is historical fact. Its reinforced by other
scripture as well, including Pauls focus on
Adams sin in Romans 512-21

14Man, The Fall, and Sin
The Inheritance of Sin
- A Definition the sinful state that all men are
born into. - Scriptural Evidence Ephesians 23 says we are
children of wrath by nature - Total Depravity man fails the test of pleasing
God. This means that every aspect of man falls
short of God and there is nothing man can do to
commend themselves to God. However, this does
notmean that everyone is as depraved as they
could be, that they do not have a conscience, or
that they indulge in every form of sin. All of
this is done in comparison to Gods holiness. - The Penalty of Inherited Sin Spiritual death
separation from God. If left unchecked, leads to
the second death after physical death. - Transmission of Inherited Sin Adam and Eves
children were sinners by birth (Genesis 41). No
one is born good and no one is partly good or
mostly good - A Remedy First, there must be a judgment on the
sinful nature so that a person is no longer bound
to it. Christs death would do this. However,
the old man is not completely destroyed until the
resurrection, so the Holy Spirit gives us
strength from day to day.
