2
WHO WAS THE POTENTIAL SPONSOR?
  • The Seattle Supersonics face the challenge of
getting a new arena within the next one year or
it would have to move out of Seattle. Probably,
this could have been averted if it had finalised
a deal with a sponsor who had approached this
team in 1994, with a deal to sponsor its new
stadium outside the city limits. However, the
fans protested against the foreign takeover,
especially as they considered the demand to
change the mascot to be a unpalatable break from
tradition. Who was the potential sponsor?

3
WHICH CHARACTER?
  • Edwin Aldrin's autobiography has the fact that
the Eagle was originally supposed to be named
after another animal, in honor of a comics book
character known for his space exploits. however,
it was shot down by Richard Nixon as the name
could have been rhymed badly. Which character or
    which animal/ comic book character?

4
WHAT WAS ESTABLISHED?
  • In 1846, this first locomotive in India was used
here to move soil away from the construction site
of an acqueduct. The locomotive frequently used
to break down and the costs of maintenance ran
upto 70,000 pounds as the engineers and parts
were frequently brought from UK to help. Thus,
the administration thought of a permanent
solution to this and in 1849, established this in
the same place. What was established?

5
WHAT TERM?
  • In 1930, George Trevor of the New York Sun
commended X and said that he had reached an
impregnable quadrilateral. The term was thought
to be too unwieldy and Atlanta Journal's OB
Keeler came up with the new name which he
borrowed from watching his wife at her evening
pastime, which he proposed in his newspaper. What
    term?

6
WHAT DID THEY DO?
  • The NY Stock Exchange declared their bi-annual
Holiday on October 29, 1886 to assist in cleaning
of the trading floor and the office of excess
paper and other material. It was the same day
that the Statue of Liberty was being dedicated to
the nation and a few young traders went upto the
rooftop to observe the event. After the ceremony
was over, they did something which became a
tradition which was met with great approval by
the city officials, who instituted this. What did
    they do?

7
WHAT TRADITION?
  • In 1949, summers were delayed across India.
Farmers were worried about the result of the
delay on their crops and people too were worried
about the effects on the fledgling economy. At
this time, Jawaharlal Nehru, on his daily walk,
saw this and asked a couple of photographer
friends to accompany him the next day.
  • They took a photograph which was published under
the heading, summers here. This was the
beginning of a tradition which is carried on till
    today. What?

8
WHAT DID THE START?
  • University of Glasgow students on a field trip to
UN in 1977, saw that there was lot of chaos and
confusion during the discussions in the General
Assembly and Security Council, which made them
start something in January 1981. What did they
    start?

9
WHAT FILM AND WHO WAS THE DIRECTOR?
  • This film was supposed to be a sequel to an
earlier hit by the director. The story revolved
around one of the kids (now an adult) going back
in past to discover how an ordinary man became
the super-villain. The stars were signed up and
the villain was signed to reprise his role, for
which he charged 50 lakhs, which was an unheard
of amount at that time. However, the director
lost interest and the project never got off the
    ground.
  • What film and who was the director?

10
WHAT BRAND?
  • Haji Mastan's niece started this company to give
a front to Haji Mastan when he became legal.
Through her father's connections, she got major
regional heroes to model for the leading product
    of this company.
  • However, the brand hit big-time when this leading
Bollywood hero also threw his weight behind the
company. Incidentally, she had an interest in
astrology and numerology amongst other things
which she passed on to the hero's family and
which also reflected in the choice of the brand
    name. What brand?

11
WHAT LOCALITY?
  • This locality of Delhi was initially named for
the British officer who shifted the population
from Raisina to this new site for the buillding
of New Delhi. However, the land on which this new
locality was established was used by nearby
Gujjars for grazing their cattle, and a huge
fight soon broke out between the settlers and the
Gujjars, going down in local legend and leading
to the name of the locality changing from the
initial name to how we know it today. What
    locality?

12
WHAT WAS COMMON?
  • 1) On 9 November, 1942, an Italian battalion
stationed in Egypt, was asked to fight the Allied
forces in Libya after their landing in North
Africa. However, the men refused to go and
mutinied, insisting that they were only willing
    to fight this war.
  • 2) In April 1943, 2 companies from the 2nd
    Battalion of Panzergrenadier Regiment 950,
refused to go fight in Holland and asked for a
move to the Eastern Front as the war on the West
    was not their war.
  • 3) In late 1943, Himmler proposed disbanding the
Regiment 950 and asking the Muslim soldiers to
join the 13th SS Volunteer Bosnian-Herzegovinian
    Mountain Division. However, the soldiers
protested against what they called was a Divide
and Rule policy that the German High Command had
    learnt from the British.

13
WHAT ONE WORD CONNECTS
14
WHY WAS THIS IN BAD TASTE?
  • In a 1998 a Super Commando Dhruv comic was banned
in Gujrat following widespread protests as it was
seen as being in bad taste. The comic featured
Dhruv doing an elaborate trapeze over a city in
Gujrat and using his superb understanding of
animal languages to make cats stampede through
the city below him to rid it of a menace. Why was
this seen as being in bad taste?

15
THE PERSON/ THE PLACE
  • His girlfriend left him and went to another city.
He followed her to that city and spent a week
wandering around, searching for her, finally
bumping into her at a beach. He fell down on his
feet and pleaded with her to get back with him
she resisted but finally won over by his passion,
gave in. Overjoyed, he made a vow that one day he
would buy a house to mark the place where he
found her again. About a decade later he
    succeeded.
  • The person? The place?

16
WHAT PRACTICE ORIGINATES FROM THIS CONVENTION
  • In the early 18th century in Meena Bazaar, Lahore
a dwarf was assigned the responsibility of
opening all the shops in the market. What
    practice originates from this convention?

17
WHAT GAME?
  • In the thirteenth century, Mongol invaders
advancing towards India met stiff resistance from
the Chagatai Turks on the way. To ensure that the
army would not meet with similar resistance on
the way back, they cut off one limb of every
    able-bodied man they could find.
  • However, on the way back as well, the Mongols
were attacked and the Chagatai were able to take
off with a lot of the loot. The tactics employed
by the Chagatais are probably the origin behind
this game, which was played by Taimur the Lames
soldiers to keep fit. What game?
