Stay Safe with the Right Container Choice
2
  • Attempting to navigate the world of shipping
containers, especially if you arent very well
versed in the shipping industry, can be a tricky
affair. Theres a potentially overwhelming amount
of information that you need to know before you
even consider making a purchase. There are a
variety of factors ranging from the grade of the
container to the size that all need to be taken
    into consideration before purchasing.

3
  • These will all factor in together with the
reasons that you need the container, as there
likely wont be a one size fits all solution to
    your shipping requirements.
  • Hopefully by investigating a few of the main
points we can help to get some clarity on the
    best choice of container.

Container grades
  • A metal shipping container, like anything else,
is prone to wear and tear. Containers are by
design made to be incredibly robust and endurable
pieces of equipment. They are designed to be
hauled across the world, trekking from place to
place in all manner of weather conditions. They
will be dragged, dropped, bumped and beaten on
their many journeys. The point of a container
grade is to determine just how structurally sound
the container is and what its still capable of
    achieving in its life.

5
  • Alongside the grade, we have the CSC plate, which
is essentially the seal of approval for the
safety of the container. The CSC will contain all
of the relevant information about the container
and what it is and is not allowed to do. All of
the grades we will be looking at will be capable
    of obtaining a CSC.

6
  • A An A-grade container, other than a brand new
container, will be of the highest quality. What
this means is that it will have little to no
stains or markings on the interior or exterior.
If specified, it will also likely be very
resistant to the elements, such as wind and rain.

7
  • B Similarly to a B-grade container, these will
still be weather resistant. A B-grade, however,
may have a significant amount of more marking and
staining present in and outside. Despite the
outward appearances, a B-grade container will
    still function perfectly fine.

8
  • C Structural damage of C-grade and below starts
to call in to question how weather resistant the
container is. If you are shipping anything that
will be damaged by rain or wind, you should
reconsider purchasing a container of this grade.
There will also be some fairly serious damage to
    the container.

Container types
  • Depending on the type of goods that you are
transporting, you will need to pick the right
container for the job. For most people, a
dry-goods container will be the one that you
want. They are spacious, resistant to the
elements and are one of the most commonly handled
    containers whilst also being plentifully
available. Its perfectly possible that your
meets wont be met by a standard dry-goods
container. If this is the case, you should start
having a look at the alternatives. Here we can
cover a few of the basics

10
  • Standard Goods A normal dry storage container
will serve you well if there is nothing
particularly strange about the size or shape of
the goods you are shipping. The sizes are
universally accepted and understood through ISO,
so you wont encounter many issues with moving
the container from point to point.

11
  • Flat Rack If your goods are particularly wide,
then the flat rack container is likely the best
choice. The side parts of a flat rack are able to
fold down, allowing far wider items than a dry
storage container would allow to be loaded on.

12
  • Open Top Similar in function to the flat rack,
an open top container has a removable top part,
so if your goods would be obstructed because of
their great height, then this container will
allow them to be easily stored.

13
  • Refrigerated These are similar in size and shape
to a dry storage container, with the advantage
that they are also capable of storing goods that
will perish without being cooled. If you are
transporting goods such as fruits or vegetables,
    this is the ideal choice.

14
  • Storage Tanks Storage tanks are the best
container to ship liquids in. The materials that
a storage tank is made from make them very
suitable to transporting dangerous liquids also,
as they are usually built from layers of thick
steel that will prevent any potentially hazardous
    fluids from leaking out.

15
  • One of the last things to consider before you go,
is where to actually purchase your container.
This will vary depending on your current
location. If you live in an area that sees a lot
of shipping, such as near an industrial in a
city, or near a port, then youll likely find
that there are a lot of containers for sale in
the area. This benefit of this in particular is
that you will be able to inspect the container to
ensure that its the right choice for you.

16
  • If you live outside of a city in a more remote
area, then you might have a great deal more
trouble getting a hold of a container for a
reasonable price. Not only will you likely have
to purchase an incredibly expensive new container
but youll also be overseeing the transport and
logistics of getting it to where it needs to be.
You always have the option of buying second-hand
to reduce your costs, but youll have no
indication of the possible quality that you could
    be receiving.

17
  • Whatever you do, try not to skimp on the quality
of the container you buy. Whatever you need it
for, you want it to be reliable and safe.
