Article MAKHACHKALA, Russia A fire in a
boarding school for the deaf in southern Russia
killed 28 children and seriously injured 17
others Thursday, as rescuers raced from bed to
bed to awaken students who could not hear alarms.

blaze spread quickly. - The blaze engulfed the wing where the schools
youngest children were sleeping. - It is said to have been caused by a short circuit
that occured when electricity was restored to the
building after a blackout.

- Firefighters rescued 138 people from the burning
building. - Those who were rescued were hospitalized for
burns, smoke inhalation, fractures, and shock. - 17 are in serious condition.

television that a night attendant smelled smoke
right before an outlet burst into flames . - Thick smoke was then visualized by the attendant.

Moscow. - An Emergency Situations Ministry plane from
Moscow - arrived in Makhachkala with a team of doctors
and medication for the injured.
