7Bereshiyt/Genesis 4418 Then Judah approached
him Artscroll Commentary All the brothers were
dumbfounded, but only Judah stepped forward,
risking his life to intercede. His speech was
simple yet eloquent controlled yet emotional
respectful yet firm. Judah petitioned without
debasing himself. He could not protest the
fairness of the verdict, because the goblet was
found in Benjamin's sack. Instead, Judah offered
himself as a slave -- not realizing that he was
speaking to the very person whom he had once sold
into slavery.
8Bereshiyt/Genesis 4418 Then Judah approached
him Artscroll Commentary All the brothers were
dumbfounded, but only Judah stepped forward,
risking his life to intercede. His speech was
simple yet eloquent controlled yet emotional
respectful yet firm. Judah petitioned without
debasing himself. He could not protest the
fairness of the verdict, because the goblet was

himself as a slave -- not realizing that he was
speaking to the very person whom he had once sold
into slavery.
9Bereshiyt/Genesis 4418 Then Judah approached
him Hertz Commentary (Pentateuch and
Haftorahs) The spirit of self-sacrifice which
Judahs speech reveals, offering to remain as a
slave in Benjamins place, has its parallels in
the life story of Moses, who besought God to blot
out his name from the Book of Life, unless his
people, Israel, is saved with him (Exodus 3232).
10- Bereshiyt/Genesis 4418 Then Judah approached
him - Comments/Questions
- Judahs approach to Joseph is true repentance.
- Did Judahs repentance redeem him, and allow the
Messiahs lineage to be traced through him? - Judah was the 4th son, and the Messiah came in
the 4th day of creation according to the
timeline.
11- Joseph Parallels Yeshua
- Comments/Questions
- Joseph was Sent from the Mountain by his Father,
was rejected by his brethren, cast into the pit,
sold for a price, falsely accused, but then
raised up to the right hand of the King for the
purpose of life (455), to preserve a remnant and
for a great deliverance (457)
12- Equal of Pharoah
- In Lies and in Shared Punishment
Chumash Bereishit, Chabad of California/Kehot
13Bereshiyt/Genesis 4427-28 (NASB) 27 "Your
servant my father said to us, 'You know that my
wife bore me two sons 28 and the one went out
from me, and I said, "Surely he is torn in
pieces," and I have not seen him since.
Artscroll Commentary Verse 27 This passage
was not recorded in the original account of
Jacob's response (436-7). This is in keeping
with the rule that the Torah is brief in one
place and expansive in another, reserving details
for wherever they would be more pertinent.
14Bereshiyt 4514-15 (CJB) 14 Then he embraced his
brother Binyamin and wept, and Binyamin wept on
his neck, 15 and he kissed all his brothers and
wept on them. After that, his brothers talked
with him. Artscroll Commentary The Midrash
comments that Joseph and Benjamin wept over the
destruction of the sanctuaries that would be
built in their respective territories the two
Temples that would stand in Benjamin's portion of
Jerusalem, and the Tabernacle of Shiloh, in the
portion of Joseph's son Ephraim. According to the
Zohar, he wept over his brothers, as well,
because he foresaw that the Ten Tribes would be
exiled and scattered among the nations.
15Bereshiyt 4514-15 (CJB) 14 Then he embraced his
brother Binyamin and wept, and Binyamin wept on
his neck, 15 and he kissed all his brothers and
wept on them. After that, his brothers talked
with him. Question Joseph wept and Benjamin
wept. When will Judah, Levi and the other
brothers weep?
16- With Weeping They Will Come
Jeremiah 318-9 (NASB) 8 "Behold, I am bringing
them from the north country, And I will gather
them from the remote parts of the earth, Among
them the blind and the lame, The woman with child
and she who is in labor with child, together A
great company, they will return here. 9 "With
weeping they will come, And by supplication I
will lead them I will make them walk by streams
of waters, On a straight path in which they will
not stumble For I am a father to Israel, And
Ephraim is My firstborn."
17- Theme of Division (2) and Grace/Mercy (5)
Bereshiyt/Genesis 456 (CJB) The famine has been
over the land for the last two years, and for yet
another five years there will be neither plowing
nor harvest. Bereshiyt/Genesis 4522 (CJB) To
each of them he gave a set of new clothes but to
Binyamin he gave seven-and-a-half pounds of
silver and five sets of new clothes.
18However, it can also be shown that this number is
the number of witness or testimony, as well. But
this relationship only proves our base meaning of
division. The scriptures teach that a person is
convicted of a crime on the basis of the
testimony of 2 or 3 witnesses. When Messiah sent
out his disciples, he sent them out two by two.
But you see, this use really speaks of one and
not two. If I have two witnesses that do not
agree, then there is division and no conviction
or confirmation can take place.

19From Catholic Sources During the 1960s, Pope
John XXIII met with a delegation of Jews and
said, "I am Joseph Your Brother" marking the
beginning of a new relationship between Jews and
Catholics. The first steps in this journey were
taken by Pope John XXIII during the Second
Vatican Council when he welcomed a Jewish
delegation with the words, "I am Joseph, your
brother."
20- The Son of a Canaanite Woman
Genesis 4610 (ESV) The sons of Simeon Jemuel,
Jamin, Ohad, Jachin, Zohar, and Shaul, the son of
a Canaanite woman.
Who is the Canaanite Woman?
The Traditional (Rabbinic) Interpretation
Chumash Bereishit, Chabad of California/Kehot
Compare this with Rabbinic Halakhah for
determining Who is a Jew?
21- The Son of a Canaanite Woman
The literal meaning, according to the Artscroll
Commentary In the most literal sense, this
verse is tacit proof that, of all the brothers,
only Simeon married a woman of Canaanite descent.
The Torah therefore singles him out for taking a
Canaanite wife.
22- The Son of a Canaanite Woman
Does it really make sense that Dinah would no
longer be considered an Israelite after being
raped by a gentile? Rabbinic halakhah
(Orthodox and Conservative) says A Jew is any
person whose mother was a Jew or any person who
has gone through the formal process of conversion
to Judaism. Do these two positions (Dinah is a
Canaanite and A Jew is any person whose mother
was a Jew) conflict? Or does this rabbinic
halakhah mean that Simeons son was not an
Israelite?
23- If you add the names listed from
Bereshiyt/Genesis 461-27, the total adds to 69. - Rashi says the missing person is Yochebed,
Moshes mother who was born between the walls,
i.e. on the way to Egypt. - Monte Judah says the missing number is Adonai,
since Bereshiyt 464 says I will go down to
Egypt with you.
24- The Greek Septuagint translation says there were
75, as it adds 3 grandsons and 2 great-grandson
of Joseph to the count - Genesis 4620 (LXX) And there were sons born to
Joseph in the land of Egypt, whom Aseneth, the
daughter of Petephres, priest of Heliopolis, bore
to him, even Manasses and Ephraim. And there were
sons born to Manasses, which the Syrian concubine
bore to him, even Machir. And Machir begot
Galaad. And the sons of Ephraim, the brother of
Manasses Sutalaam, and Taam. And the sons of
Sutalaam Edom.
25- The Dead Sea Scrolls is missing from Bereshiyt
4612 4712. - However, scrolls 4QExod(b) and 4QGen-Exod(a)
read seventy-five at Shemot/Exodus 15. - Thus, there were two different Hebrew readings
in ancient times.
26- The Greek and Aramaic versions of the book of
Acts 713 each read seventy-five. - Monte Judah believes that Stephen is quoting the
70 from the Masoretic text, plus Jacob, Zilpah,
Bilhah, Leah and the Messiah since the seventy
are those who came from the loins of Jacob. - Or, Stephen is just quoting from that other
Hebrew textual tradition
