  • Possibly the most important job in the
    corporation
  • Already know the importance of good cleaning and
    disinfecting techniques
  • Ways to ensure your safety while doing your job
    cleaning

Bloodborne Pathogens
  • Microorganisms such as viruses or bacteria that
    are carried in blood and cause diseases
  • Many different BBP
  • Hepatitis B (HBV)
  • Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)
  • (OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Standard)

Hepatitis B
  • More easily transmitted than HIV or other forms
    of Hepatitis
  • Can lead to serious liver cirrhosis or cancer
  • Can live in dried blood on inanimate objects one
    week
  • Prevention
  • Vaccination Have you had yours???

HIV
  • Virus attacks the immune system
  • May not progress to AIDS for many years
  • Virus does not survive long in dried blood
  • No Vaccination

Modes of Transmission HBV and HIV
  • Sexual Contact
  • Sharing of hypodermic needles
  • From mothers to their babies at/before birth
  • Accidental puncture from contaminated needles,
    broken glass, or other sharps
  • Contact between broken or damaged skin and
    infected body fluids
  • Contact between mucous membranes and infected
    blood and body fluids

Risks in School Setting
  • You are on the front lines for cleaning blood or
    body fluid spills
  • Do you follow these steps listed below?
  • Make sure you have the appropriate cleaning
    solution and supplies
  • Wear impermeable gloves
  • Remove visible material with absorbent towels
  • If hard surface flood with 10 bleach solution
  • Reclean area with fresh towels
  • If rug or carpet, use sanitary absorbent agent
    according to directions
  • Place all soiled items in biohazard bag and place
    in biohazardous receptacle in health office
  • Wash Hands

How to protect yourself
  • Standard Precautions
  • Consider all body fluids and blood potentially
    hazardous
  • PPE personal protective equipment
  • (gloves, gown, mask, goggles)
  • If ever have an exposure tell your immediate
    supervisor and the School Nurse

Handwashing
  • Handwashing - most important and easiest practice
    used to prevent transmission of BBP
  • Wash hands or other exposed skin thoroughly
    ASAP following exposure incident
  • Wash hands washed immediately after removal of
    all PPE
