• India has always been the largest producer (an
  estimated 400 million litre per day currently)
  and consumer of milk in the world.
• Out of the 400 million litres of milk that India
  produces per day, 160 million litres per day (48
  per cent) is retained by the producers for their
  own consumption.
• The surplus milk that is available for sale is
  around 240 million litres per day (52 per cent)
  and out of that, only 70 million litres per day
  is being used by the organised sector.
• Over 170 million litres of the surplus milk
  continues to be with the unorganised sector,
  comprising traditional Doodhwalas.

• The Indian milk economy is worth Rs 5 lakh crore,
  growing at a CAGR of 15-16 per cent, out of which
  the organised milk economy, is worth Rs 80,000
  crore.
• Over 80 per cent of milk consumption in India is
  that of liquid milk and over 55 per cent of the
  revenue of large co-operatives, such as Amul and
  Nandini, comes from selling liquid milk.
• Playing a crucial role in this arena is Nichrome
