Access Web of Science
  • From the SPH Library home page, go to online
    databases
  • Click on W
  • Select Web of Science

Searching Web of Science
  • Click on Cited Reference Search

Searching Web of Science
  • Enter your lastname firstname
  • Include middle initial if thats how you publish
  • Dont use commas
  • Enter a year only if you have published quite a
    few articles

What journals are indexed?
  • If you publish extensively, you may also want to
    search by individual journal titles

Viewing results
  • Print out these results to compile your list of
    how often you have been cited
  • Books/book chapters may appear, but will not be
    linked in this database

Problems with citations
  • Are there bad cites?
  • Citing authors frequently give wrong pages
    numbers or volumes in their bibliographies
  • Sometimes even the name is wrong!

  • Web of Science is not comprehensive
  • Indexes only 8,500 journals
  • Use other sources to supplement Web of Science

  • Beginning to include number of times articles are
    cited within that database
  • Still a small percentage of articles have this

  • Do a fulltext search in ASP
  • Searches the bibliographies from articles
  • Use quotation marks ( ) around name
  • Use last name and initials

  • Items found will have aday la somewhere within
    the text

  • When looking at ASP results, only include those
    not covered by Web of Science
  • Ex. Web of Science indexes Journal of Nursing
    Care Quality (1st item on list) so it has been
    counted
