Title: Welcome To: Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering MME
1Welcome ToDepartment of Mechanical and
Materials Engineering (MME)
2What is MME ?
- MME uses principles of graphics, mathematics,
materials, physics and economics to design,
manufacture, operate and maintain processes and
devices. - MME is the broadest of the engineering
disciplines, and is present in every sector
(industry, transportation, education, health
care, government).
3Is MME for you?
- Are you interested in how things work?
- Are you interested in how things are made?
- Would you like to invent something?
- Would you like to run your own company or
consulting firm one day? - Would you like to have an impact on how the world
produces and uses energy to do useful things? - Would you like to help make the world a better
place for everyone?
4Where do you want to work?
- MMEs are in
- Energy (Fossil Fuel, Nuclear, Solar, Geothermal,
Wind .) - Environment (bio-fuels, bio-resources,
bio-remediation) - Design and Manufacturing (toys to rocket engines)
- Construction (building systems, tunnels, )
- Transportation (land, sea, air and space)
- Health and Medicine (biomechanical)
- Military (from jet pilots to ships engineers)
- Chemical process, Oil and gas exploration and
production, pipelines, - Consulting (all of the above )
5Other Careers ?
- MME Degree can be foundation for just about any
career - Engineering
- Education
- Business
- Law
- Medicine, Dentistry
- whatever you want to do, MME can get you there.

19The Program
- Designed to give you a solid foundation in MME
- Designed to be flexible if you are not yet
committed to a specialty. - Can Choose from three options
- General MME
- Materials
- Biomechanical
20The Program
- Common 2nd and mostly in 3rd year, electives and
team design project in 4th year - General Option ME1, concentrations in
- Aerospace Engineering
- Energy and Fluid Systems
- Manufacturing Engineering
- Mechatronics Engineering
- Materials Option ME2 in years 3 and 4
- Biomechanical Option ME3 in years 3 and 4
21Learning Experience
- Theory practice
- Technical communication
- Hands on
- Lab and project based
- Work in teams, just like in the real world
22ME1 General Option
- Gives you the basics and then some
- Math and numerical methods, computing
- Thermodynamics, fluids and heat transfer
- Solid mechanics and dynamics
- Graphical, written and verbal communication
- Material Properties
- Electronics, Mechatronics
- Design and Manufacturing
- Project Management
- Wide range of technical electives so you can try
out some specialty fields
23Materials Option ME2(2 courses in 3rd year, 3
from 6 courses in 4th year)
- Development of improved and new materials
- Production, use and characterization of
manufactured materials - Investigate fractures, fatigue failures,
corrosion and radiation damage - Metallic, plastic and ceramic materials
- No device without materials!

24Biomechanical Option ME3(first offering in Fall
of 2008 with new 3rd year courses)
- Get a degree in mechanical engineering with
biomechanical engineering option stated on the
transcript - Four new courses added to courses already offered
- Human Mobility Research Centre (HMRC)
- Model follows that of ME2 materials option (2
courses in 3rd year, 3 from 6 courses in 4th year)

25- Advice for choosing a Discipline ?
- Select the discipline that will hold your
interest for the next 3 years - Choice of discipline influences the first job
placement after that you can pick your path.
to management, technical specialty, your own
business.
26Want to be a specialist?
- Start thinking about graduate school.
- You get paid to be a grad student.
- MSc degree is the entry level degree for some
fields. - May need an MSc soon to be a P.Eng.
- Talk to Professors.
- Look into scholarships.
27Facilities
- Main building is McLaughlin Hall
- Materials in Nicol Hall (recently renovated)
- Biomechanical in Hospital (HMRC)
- Undergrad labs in Jackson Hall and the ILC
- New building for MME to be constructed behind the
ILC by 2012
28- Queens mechanical has 450 students (150/year).
But class size of less than 50 students in
technical electives and the ME2 and ME3 options.
29Hands-on facilities and activities in Queens MME
