• Review of senior clerkship options 20 min
• Intro to clerkship evaluation- 10 min

Senior Clerkship Starts July 30, 2007

• 9 four week blocks
• 1 block ER
• 1 block surgical subspecialty
• 1 block geriatrics
• 1 block medicine and society
• 1 (2) block(s) vacation/interviews
• 4 blocks electives
• Will finish April 6, 2007 - allows 3 to 4 weeks
  study before LMCC exams

• You will be asked for your choice of rotation
  schedule and we will do our best to accommodate
  your request.

Issues to consider when selecting your
preferences

• Vacations, both July vacation and January
  vacation can be switched with electives.
• If you are interested in a surgical subspecialty,
  ER, or medical specialty, consider requesting a
  sequence that allows you to do your area of
  choice before the MSPE is sent out.
• If you are interested in the Seminar option
  Anatomy for Surgeons, or other seminar options,
  request a sequence that allows this course.

Issues to consider when selecting your preference

• If you are applying to medicine, neurology, or
  family med, consider selecting a rotation that
  allows you to do geriatrics early.
• If you need to attend a conference during senior
  clerkship (such as IFMSA) consider selecting an
  elective during this time.
• If you are interested in a research project,
  request the research sequence.
• Interviews for US programs are often held in
  early December if you are applying to the US,
  consider requesting an elective during this time.

• For those of you who wish to do Sequence 5 we
  will give priority to those who have a research
  project at McGill planned. Submit to Silvana a
  confirmation letter from your supervisor, which
  includes his/her contact information and a brief
  description of the project.

• If you do not get your first choice sequence, or
  change your mind about your career choice after
  you have been assigned, you can use your elective
  time to do relevant rotations.

• Please use electives to broaden your medical
  education no matter how narrow the specialty
  you choose, you will be better at it if you have
  a solid background in general medicine.
• Those of you choosing more generalist careers,
  you will be better at it if you develop some
  depth in specialized areas.

• Reminder For those of you who havent yet
  booked your third year elective, you can request
  to do geriatrics during this elective, and move
  that elective to fourth year.
• This requires approval from the geriatrics
  clerkship director, Dr. Gustavo Duque
  (Gustavo.Duque_at_mcgill.ca), and Silvana must be
  notified.

• Register on line, with your choice of sequence,
  by Nov. 1st.
• Registration opens as of Oct. 19th. Go to www.
  medicine.mcgill.ca, go to medical education,
  undergraduate, then clerkship (core and senior)
  then senior clerkship form.
• You will also be asked for your preference for
  your surgical subspecialty month

PREMs and PEMs

• PREM Programme Régionale des effectifs medicaux

• The provincial health manpower plan.

• The province is divided into 18 regions. Health
  services, included health manpower, under the
  responsibility of the the Agence de santé et
  services sociaux for each region.
• Monteal is region 6, James Bay region 18 etc.
• Each region works out its physician manpower
  needs with the Ministry of Health.

• PREMs apply to hospital appointments and family
  medicine spots.
• Private Practiceis not affected.

• In general, each health care institution can
  replace a specialist with another doctor from the
  same speciality.
• Each province has provincial manpower plans.
• These change frequently probably should not be
  a basis on which to choose your career.
