Title: Remembrance
1Remembrance
2What is remembrance?
Can you remember something that happened
yesterday?
Can you remember something that happened when
you were very small?
Can you remember something that happened last
week?
3Sometimes its not very easy to remember things
so we often use objects to help us.

4At this time of year we use something very
special to help us remember
A Poppy
5Why the poppy?
The poppy is worn to remind us of the many people
killed on the battlefields of World War I, World
War II and all the wars fought since.
6The First World War was fought From 1914
1918 And some of the worst fighting took Place in
the Northern Regions of France and Belgium.
7Soldiers from countries all over the world fought
in the war, but the war lasted a very long time.
Many thousands died and people were very sad.
Where a lot of the fighting happened was near
fields of poppies around a place called Flanders.
The soldiers saw all the poppies as symbols of
both loss and hope.
8On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the
eleventh month in 1918 the First World War ended
The Armistice (an agreement) was signed at 5am
in a railway carriage in the Forest of
Compiegne, France on November 11, 1918. Six
hours later, at 11am, the war ended.
11.00am 11th November 1918
9The first Remembrance Day was held in 1919
Originally it was called Armistice Day, it
commemorated the end of war the previous year.
and provided an opportunity to remember those
who had died.
After the end of the Second World War in 1945
Armistice Day became Remembrance Day to include
all those who had died in the two World Wars and
any later wars and the poppy became the symbol
to remember
10So now we wear the poppy to remember.
On the 11th November at 11.00 am we have two
minutes silence to remember those who have died.
At this time a very special piece of music is
played called the last post.
On the second Sunday in November special
ceremonies are held at war memorials all around
the country and people pay their respect to all
the soldiers killed in the wars.
11In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the
crosses, row on row, That mark our place and in
the sky The larks, still bravely singing,
fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. We are the
Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw
sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we
lie In Flanders fields. Take up our quarrel with
the foe To you from failing hands we throw The
torch be yours to hold it high. If ye break
faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though
poppies grow In Flanders fields By John McCrae
1915
12Time to reflect and remember people who have
helped us in the past, those we knew and those we
didnt know. Today we think especially of people
who have died in wars and fighting. We take a
moment to think of some special people, Soldiers,
sailors, pilots, the police, firefighters and
ambulance drivers- And all who still risk their
lives for our safety. Together we say THANK YOU!
