10THE FACTS TELL THE STORY
11NINETY-FIVE PERCENT OF FORTUNE 500 EXECUTIVES
PARTICIPATED IN SCHOOL ATHLETICS
Fortune Magazine, 1987
1260 of the parents with children enrolled in
school regarded co-curricular programs as very
important while a further,
1978 Gallop Survey
1330 thought that they were fairly important.
Only one parent in eight said that activities
were not too important.
1978 Gallop Survey
14In the same poll,
50 of the students described themselves as
somewhat or very active in co-curricular
activities.
1978 Gallop Survey
1556 of the students indicated that the best
means of establishing status and acceptance among
peers was through participation in student
activities as opposed to earning high grades,
involvement in student government and driving a
car to school.
1978 Gallop Survey
16The reasons for participation were
97 PERSONAL ACHEIVEMENT
95 PERSONAL ENJOYMENT
1978 Gallop Survey
17A very interesting note was the 89 of those who
did not participate in high school co-curricular
activities did so because of jobs outside of
school. The other main reason for not
participating was that activity was scheduled
after school. Our Manitoba statistics show
approximately 25 of that senior high student
population participate in interschool athletics

18What prominent Manitobans have said about the
benefits of SCHOLASTIC ATHLETICS
19 Participating in high school athletics taught
me the value of teamwork and how important a role
determination, and hard work played in achieving
success. I believe the knowledge gained from
participating in extra curricular activities, is
an extremely valuable component of a complete
education.
John Loewen MLA Fort Whyte Basketball and
Football Player Churchill High School
20School sports were a huge motivator for me, and
the major focus of school life. The skills I use
most in my life today, at home, and work, were
learned and reinforced through sport. There is no
better classroom for learning teamwork,
cooperation, self-motivation, and control,
discipline, and leadership, than through school
sport.
Carol Ploen-Hosegood Businesswoman, Basketball
and Badminton Player Vincent Massey Collegiate
21Athletics is about personal achievement and
personal growth. Having played team sports in
high school and university, it is also about
teamwork and strong friendships that have the
potential to last a lifetime. My involvement in
athletics continues to hold many fond memories
for me
Gary Filmon Former Premier of Manitoba Basketball
Player Sisler High School
22Coming from a rural community high school,
sports were the major challenge and motivator of
my educational experience. Through athletics I
learned skills of cooperation, discipline, and
leadership. The competitiveness of the game
provided alertness, fitness, mental, and social
development beneficial qualities for home and
business.
Ronn Peyton-Vesby Self Employed Businessperson
Volleyball Basketball Player Swan Valley

23Perhaps one of the best summaries of the benefits
of an interscholastic program was made by Mr.
Paul Briggs, Superintendent of school in
Cleveland, Ohio, when he had this to say about
the results of a survey of athletics in secondary
schools
24Athletics are not only keeping students in
school, but are providing them with future
education opportunities. I have seen so many
success stories come out of the athletic clan
that I have become perhaps the strongest advocate
of any of the superintendents in the United
States on behalf of the effective programs.
