Distribution Egypt, China, Korea and
Japan

Morphology1.7 x 0.4 mm. Pyriform, covered with
scale-like spine more numerous at the anterior
end.

Suckers Oral sucker around the mouth
anteriorly. Ventral sucker large, lies in the
middle third of the worm, at the middle line.
Genital sucker around the common genital pores,
situated posterior and lateral to the ventral
sucker.

Digestive system similar to that of Fasciola but
the muscular pharynx surround only the middle
part of the esophagus and intestinal caeca are
simple, i.e., not branched.

Reproductive organs - Male genital organs two
oval testes lie side by side near the posterior
end of the worm - Female genital organs the
ovary is spherical in front and between the
testes. Vitelline glands are 7 pairs on both
sides posteriorly.

The parasite is found deeply embedded in between
the intestinal wall of man, dog, fox, cat as D.H.

The eggs pass with stools, and are characterized
by - Size small 30 x 15 - Shape Oval. -
Shell Thick, double layer, with an operculum at
the narrow pole and a knob Like thickening at the
other pole..

ColourYellowish-brown. - Content Mature, i.e.
with Miracidium

The egg does not hatch in water, but it is taken
as such by the first I.H. which is a
brakish-water snail,, Pirenella conica in Egypt,
Cerithidia cingula in Japan.

Inside the snail the egg hatches - Miracidium
Sporocyst Rediae - Cercariae that come out from
the snail.

Cercaria It is called Opthalmolophocercous
cercania i.e. with eye spots and finned tail,
it is formed of body with two eye spots

Seven pairs of salivary glands, and V shaped

Opthalmo-lophocercous cercania moves in water
till it finds the second I.H. (transport host)
which is Tilapia nilotica (Bolty) and Mugil
cephalus (Boury) fish.

It penetrates the skin of the fish leaving its
tail outside. In the muscles of fish it becomes
an encysted metacercariae which is the infective
stage after 2-3 weeks

The drug of choice is praziquantel given in a
dose 3X25 mg / kg body weight as 1-day treatment
