Title: Virtual Teaching

1
Virtual Teaching
  • Classes On-line in the Elementary Class Room
  • http//www.edweek.org/ew/ew_printstory.cfm?slug10
    Tech.h23

2
What is it?
  • Imagine a classroom with only computers with no
front or back, no board or teachers desk.
  • Now imagine no room at all and no school
  • The virtual classroom is only found online.

3
In the Beginning
  • The online classroom started in college
  • Over the years moved into the high school class
room and finial moved into the elementary levels.
  • Now one can find classrooms that are only online
and there is no need for the child to leave home.

4
How does it Work?
  • The child works from there home, usually with the
    guidance of their care taker.
  • There is no need for books or the common school
    supplies.
  • The child has instant access to the teacher at
    all times.

5
Relationships
  • The child and instructor can have a close
    relationship because of instant access.
  • The child is forced to network with the other
    students
  • In most cases the children because of the nature
of online chat build a better bond
  • Most on line classrooms if in one location will
meet for at least one field trip.

6
Time in the Day
  • Helps more children
  • Allows the class to meet at anytime
  • Can fit into parents schedules for at home
    involvement

7
What Doesnt Work
  • There is a lack of interpersonal involvement that
    can take place.
  • The child can lose interest and choose not to
    participate.
  • Computers must always be in working order and
    up-to-date.
  • Can hurt the creativity found in a classroom.

8
Problems Cont.
  • Cheating can be a hard thing to control
  • Its hard to gage a set pace in a classroom that
cant be instructed to all at once.

9
Online Classes on the Rise
  • As of 2003, there were roughly 1600 K-12 online
    teachers in the US.
  • Growth is expected to go up by a third by the end
    of 2005

10
Personal Feelings
  • There are many bugs to work out of how a virtual
    classroom should be instructed.
  • I look forward to exploring this new classroom
  • The added effect to a class like this are
    limitless.
  • This classroom could become the new normal.
