- We are your local water company
- We collect water from the natural environment
- We provide you with clean, safe drinking water
- We send this water to homes, schools
- and businesses.
- Once it has been used we take the
- dirty water away and retreat before
- returning it to the environment.
- We manage the infrastructure to allow this
- to happen.

4Why is Northumbrian Water involved in education?
- Northumbrian Water provides water and waste water
services to 2.6 million customers in the north
east of England. - As a responsible business we have a corporate
responsibility to use our resources for the
benefit not only of our customers and
shareholders, but also for the wider community. - As a result we are immersed in local community
life and believe that the future education,
health and wellbeing of our children is of prime
importance. - As water is part of the National Curriculum and
the Sustainable Schools National Framework we are
continually being asked by schools for support
which we aim to do by providing good quality
educational resources and employee support.
5So what can Northumbrian Water provide?
- CD Roms
- Water made clearer -An interactive virtual
reality CD Rom, which takes children on a journey
around the water cycle and our place in it. - The Water Family (also available via our website
www.thewaterfamily.co.uk) - this is a fun game
that looks at water use and also waste in the
home. - The Water School ((also available via the website
www.thewaterschool.co.uk) - this provides
everything you need to set up and run a water
conservation project in your school. - Posters
- Water cycle - an A0 size annotated laminated
poster of the water cycle. - Water cycle colouring poster - an A4 size poster
of the water cycle, which allows children to
colour while they learn.

Northumbrian Water GLOBE Project The
Northumbrian Water GLOBE Project is just about to
be launched, this unique scheme link schools and
education centres in the North East, using the
GLOBE Programme to measure the weather. By
setting up a network of schools and education
centres providing weather data we hope to be able
to predict changes in weather patterns as a
result of climate change. This will lead to a
better understanding of the operational
challenges facing our sewerage network.
9 Why not invite us in?
- Through our Just an Hour scheme we have a panel
of speakers who - can offer talks on many different subjects
including sewage treatment, - water treatment and water conservation.
- Teams are available to help with projects such
- as helping with wildlife areas.
- We support schools with industry days, mentoring,
- young enterprise etc.

- Saving water is not just about saving water
- water is an important resource
- clean water is essential to the health of people
and the environment - World wide it is an increasingly scarce resource
- even in parts of the UK

- Water bills reduced good news for schools
- expensive new water abstraction or reservoirs
avoided or delayed - rivers and wetlands improved
- reduced water treatment saving chemicals and
energy - less pollution

- Dont let fats and oils go down the sink.
- They can harden and block the drains.
- Or they can block the sewers and cause
- sewer flooding.
- Dispose by leaving to cool and putting
- into a container and into the bin.
- Or mixing with bread and seeds to feed the birds.
14Other things to considerBag it and bin it
- Dont use the toilet as a bin
- Think natural if it didnt come out of your
body naturally and it isnt toilet tissue dont
flush it. - Bag it and bin it instead.
- A staggering 9000 tonnes of sanitary Plastics
- and flushed waste items from sewage are
- removed by NW every year a needless
- use of resources and cash.

schools children.
