Idiom

• Words used in a special way that is different
  from their literal meaning.

Example My grandpa was 102 years old when he
kicked the bucket.
Kicked the bucket is an idiom that means died.

Analogy

• A comparison based on resemblance or showing a
  relationship.

Example An arm on a person is like a branch on
a tree because both are connected parts of the
larger whole.
Sometimes analogies are stated like this Branch
is to tree as arm is to person.

Simile

• A figure of speech that compares two things using
  words of comparison such as like or as.
• Example The dog danced around like loose litter
  in the wind.

Dog is being compared to litter in the wind
which helps the reader to understand its
movements.

Metaphor

• A figure of speech that compares two things
  without using a word of comparison
• such as like or as.

Example The cup of hot tea was the best
medicine for my cold.
Tea is being compared to medicine.
