Questions Concerning Senior Citizens
  • I was waiting behind a car at the window, when
all of a sudden, the car backed up right into me.
No damage, it was just a love tap. However, the
"little old lady" driving had no idea what was
happening, it looked like she was fishing for
change. Even when I sounded my horn, she never
looked up. Afterwards, I asked her if she was ok,
and she said "yes, I thought I had it in park."
Even the drive thru attendant told me she was
wondering what this lady was doing. This driver
had to be at least 75 if not older. My
question---Should seniors be required to retake
driver's tests when they reach a certain age?
  • Quote by Babybooey from Nitrosim.com website
  • SHOULD YOU BE DRIVING AT YOUR AGE? Ask your
physician for his/her advice. Should you be
driving? Check your reaction time. Do you jam
on the brakes at the last minute? Check your
vision. Do you have good peripheral vision?
Check your medications. What are the side affects
of your medications? Analyze your need to
drive. Can you take public transportation?

Senior Citizens should be on the Road only o
n
certain circumstances.

22 States Already Have Senior Citizens Re-Taking
The Driving Test
  • The states that put restrictions on license
renewals do so in a number of ways. Fourteen
    states (Arizona, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho,
Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Missouri,
Montana, New Mexico, Rhode Island, and South
Carolina) have accelerated renewal periods for
people over a certain age. These periods can vary
widely. For example, Colorado requires everyone
age 61 and older to renew their license every 5
years as opposed to every 10 years for people
under age 61. Illinois has a 4-year renewal
period, but the period shortens to 2 years if the
driver is between the ages of 81 and 86, and then
to 1 year if the driver is age 87 or older.
  • Six states (Florida, Maine, Oregon, South
Carolina, Utah, and Virginia) and the District of
Columbia require elderly drives to take a vision
test when renewing a license. Another way states
monitor older drivers is by not allowing drivers
over a certain age to renew their licenses by
mail. Five states (Alaska, California, Colorado,
Louisiana, and Montana) restrict mail renewals.
Finally, two states (Illinois and New Hampshire)
require a road test if the driver is 75 years old
    or older.

Causes For Concern For The Elderly Behind The
Wheel.
  • Poor Vision - Cataracts, glaucoma, and macular
degeneration can reduce visual acuity and limit
visual fields, so a yearly eye exam is imperative
for the elderly driver. Ask the doctor about
driving, and don't take the word of the elderly
driver on the results of her exam.
  • Poor Hearing - Something as simple as a clogged
ear passage can create a hearing loss. A doctor
can identify the problem and offer solutions, so
    have elderly hearing checked yearly.
  • Poor Flexibility and Limited Range of Motion -
Good drivers rely on looking out rear and side
windows as well as checking rearview mirrors.
When a driver lacks the ability to turn his head
and shoulders to look outside, he may not see
oncoming vehicles or obstacles traveling in the
    car's blindspot.
  • Reduced Reaction Time - As we age, we slow down,
and reaction times diminish. Keeping extra space
between the driver's and other cars can help
reduce the likelihood of accidents, but there
comes a time when reactions are too slow for road
safety. Click here for a reaction time test that
will show you graphically how far you travel
after you see a red light!

It seems that Senior Citizens dont realize what
harm they cause on the roads.
