6The Course. What are we going to do..?
- Talk about how to get through ?
- Meet representatives from each school
- Learn about engineering design
- Talk about engineering ethics and the job
- Do two design projects and reports
- Talk about data analysis tools and use them
7Grading
- Attendance to Class (25)
- (Secret Word)
- Successful Completion of Each Design Project and
Report (50) - Completion of Homework (25)
8Purpose of Course
- Give each student an overview and introduction to
each of the Engineering disciplines - Give each student a sense of what Engineers do
- Help the student determine where he or she
belongs in the university experience
9Thats Why We Call it Introduction to
Engineering..
10Now Why We Called You Here
- The First Assignment and design project
- Due on or about Feb 18, 2003 (Engineers Week)
- Team Project.. Ya need a team (6 to 9)
- Look around you and we need teams by next time.
11Rube Goldberg Projectwww.rubegoldberg.com and
www.rubemachine.com
- What is Rube Goldberg?
- The Rube Goldberg Machine Contest (RGMC) is
named after the late cartoonist Reuben Lucius
Goldberg. For 55 years the award winning
cartoonist drew machines and contraptions that
satirized the new machines and gadgets being
built. His drawings, using simple gadgets and
household items already in use, were incredibly
complex and wacky, but had an ingenious, logical
progression to them. - In this same spirit, you have been given the
task of building a machine to select and crush a
12 ounce aluminum can, and place in a recycle bin
the machine should incorporate a minimum of 20
steps.
12Rube Goldberg Cartoon
As you raise spoon of soup (A) to your mouth it
pulls string (B), thereby jerking ladle (C) which
throws cracker (D) past parrot (E). Parrot jumps
after cracker and perch (F) tilts, upsetting
seeds (G) into pail (H). Extra weight in pail
pulls cord (I), which opens and lights automatic
cigar lighter (J), setting off sky-rocket (K)
which causes sickle (L) to cut string (M) and
allow pendulum with attached napkin to swing back
and forth thereby wiping off your chin. After the
meal, substitute a harmonica for the napkin and
you'll be able to entertain the guests with a
little music.
13Rube Goldberg Rules
- The machine must complete the required task as
previously described - The machine must be no larger than 5 ft. x 5 ft.
x 6 ft. but can be in any orientation - The machine must have a minimum of 20 steps,
there is no maximum. - The machine must run for no more than 2 minutes.
- No live animals may be used in the machine
- Any loose or flying objects must remain within
the set boundaries of the machine. This
includes, but is not limited to, drops of water,
slivers of balloon, and other small objects.
Steam and other gases are exempt from this rule. - No flames may be used in the machine.
- No hazardous materials or explosives can be used
on the machine. - Questionable items must be approved prior to the
competition. - AC power will be provided at the contest.
Contestants requiring water will need to find a
way to provide it themselves.
14Judging Criteria
- Judging will be based on a 100 point scale broken
down into the following categories - General impressions
- Theme (10 points)
- Rube Goldberg Spirit (20 points)
- Explanation/Description (5 points)
- Timing Issues
- Length of Run (-10 to 0 points)
- Run Related
- Completed Task Run 1 (20 points)
- Completed Task Run 2 (20 points)
- Flow of Machine Easily Followed (10 points)
- Rube Goldberg Style Steps (10 points)
- Human Interventions (-3 points each)
- Objects Leaving Machine (-5 points each)
- Report (Arbitrary point value)
15Prizes
- Cash prizes will be awarded to the top finishers.
- The instructor reserves the right to award prizes
for Engineering Excellence and/or Exceptional
Creativity
16What We Do Now
- Select a team by next time
- Come up with a team name
- Prepare a team roster to be handed in next time
(select a team spokesperson) - Have members here next time for a team photo
- Research the Project (discussion next Tuesday)
17Time is Short
- The Competition is Feb 18, 2003
- DONT PUT THIS OFF
- About 25 of Grade is at Stake
- You Have to Write a Report.we will discuss this
shortly - Organize Your Team NOW
