  • 24 February 2005

2
Types of Learners
  • Visual 40 of population
  • Auditory 30 of population
  • Kinesthetic 30 of population

3
Visual Learners Typically
  • Remember what was read or seen.
  • Don't retain what they hear for very long
  • May think in pictures or may think in words
  • Vivid imaginations
  • Use color
  • Remember faces, but not names
  • Like written reports better than verbal ones

4
Auditory Learners Typically
  • Remember what they hear
  • Talk while they write
  • May be a sophisticated speaker
  • Remember by listening, especially music
  • Often, information written down will have little
meaning until it has also been heard

5
Kinesthetic Learners Typically
  • Want to move all the time
  • Are well coordinated
  • Are doers
  • Like to take things apart, put them back together
    and see how things work
  • Need concrete things to act as learning aides

6
Break it down
  • What are the strengths of your learning style?
  • What are the challenges?
  • What are some strategies you can use to be more
successful particularly in your current classes?

7
More ideas for the visual learner
  • Write out everything for frequent and quick
    visual review
  • Use color coding when learning new concepts and
    words
  • Use outlines of reading assignments which cover
key points and guide your reading
  • Use notes and flash cards for review of material,
vocabulary, and terminology for a specific course

8
More for the Auditory Learner
  • The student should position themselves in the
classroom or lecture hall so that he/she can hear
    lectures and review them frequently
  • Read aloud or re-auditorize written material
    (restate in your own words)
  • Verbally review spelling words and lectures with
another person - practice verbal repetition

9
More Ideas for Kinesthetic Learners
  • Study in short blocks of time rather than
    extended periods
  • Study in short blocks of time rather than
    extended periods
  • Have as many experimental learning opportunities
as possible, such as lab and studio courses, as
opposed to straight lecture classes - if you have
    a choice
  • Use flash cards
