    Paintings
  • By Neil Pruthi

3
Childhood
  • Alfred Sisley was born of English parents in
    Paris, France, October 30, 1839.
  • Alfred did not really consider an art career,
until late childhood, because his father wanted
him to pursue a career in business.
  • After his father took him to England for
business, Alfred Sisley decided that he would
pursue an art career, and moved back to Paris.

4
Art Education
  • Once Sisley returned from London after his failed
embarkment on a career in commerce, in 1962, he
entered the Atelier Gleyre in Paris, where he met
Bazille, Monet, and Renoir, who were fellow
artists studying at the Atelier Gleyre.
  • They were good friends, and often worked together
    in the suburbs of Paris.

5
Art Career
  • Alfred Sisley first sent his paintings to the
Paris Salon in 1866 and continued to sell them
    there from 1868-1870.
  • During the Franco-Prussian war, Sisley lost all
his possesions and was left in poverty for many
    years.
  • He then painted many great paintings over the
    course of about 30 years.

6
  • Sisley did not ever see his talent recognized.
  • He married Marie Louise Adelaide Eugene
    Lescouezec and had 2 children.
  • He died in 1897, when his paintings were still
    not recognized as great.

Alfred Sisley
  • Impressionism vs. Traditional Painting

9
Sisleys Childhood
  • Sisley was born in Paris, which was one of
his favorite places to paint, to English parents
on October 30, 1839. Sisleys father sent him to
London to become a business man, but Sisley soon
returned, to the disappointment of his father,
and began to focus on his art.

10
Sisleys Education In Art
  • As an amateur at the studio of M.C.G Gleyer,
where he made the acquaintance of impressionist
artists such as Renoir, Monet, and J.F Bazille.
He soon began to reject the studios ideas, and
paint like his impressionists influences. He
painted mostly landscapes using bright coloring.

11
Sisleys Adult Life
  • Sisley always struggled
  • financially, his talent
  • was not recognized until
  • after his death. He died,
  • isolated and alone, of
  • throat cancer on January
  • 29, 1899.

12
Painting Description
  • The Church at Monet
  • A large church, either at
  • dawn or in the late
  • evening. People, small
  • out of focus, file in
  • thorough its large doors.
  • The sun turns the white
  • Church yellow in the sun
  • and purple in the shadows.

13
Traditional Painting vs. Impressionism
  • Traditional paintings looked life-like and the
people in them were very large. There isnt any
obvious brush-work, with no visible strokes. The
coloring was often dark and shadowy. Nature was
often used as a background, but never a subject.
  • Impressionists used light colors, and painted the
way they saw things. They didnt try to add or
    beautify anything. People in impressionists
paintings were often cut off or out of focus.
Impressionists sometimes mixed colors directly on
the canvas. Though not immediately popular, not
all responses to impressionism were negative.
