  • Began during Greek times
  • Similar to discus and horseshoes
  • Played in England by working class people
  • Once considered illegal due to ties with pubs and
    taverns

  • Maintenance of equipment is required
  • Publicity in Europe
  • Many different varieties
  • Hard to establish leagues due to so many
    variations
  • Strong following in northeastern US

Variations of Quoits
  • Northern Game most common
  • Indoor played in Wales and England, played to
    61 points
  • Long Game quoits can weigh up to 11 lbs., hubs
    are 18 yards apart
  • East Anglian receive 2 pts. regardless of
    opponents effort, smaller quoits
  • Sward or Lawn Quoits 2 stakes in lawn
  • Modern deck (cruise ships) and rope

Terms
  • Hill top surface of the quoit
  • Hole bottom surface of the quoit
  • Cover quoit thrown that covers part of the top
    of the hob
  • Bibber offers encouragement to the thrower
  • Trig-man watches for foot faults

Rules
  • Two or Four person game
  • 4 quoits
  • Rotate who throws
  • Throwers foot cant go beyond hub of home
    board
  • Boards are placed 18 ft. apart
  • If quoit touches ground, its considered dead
  • Interference allows re-throw

Scoring
  • First to reach 21 points wins
  • Ringer is worth 3 points
  • Leaner is worth 1 point
  • If no ringers or leaners, whoever throws closest
    receives 1 point

Equipment
  • 4 Rubber Quoits 1 lb. each
  • 2 slate hubs (2 ft. X 2 ft.)
  • Rings engraved on hubs to easily determine
    closest quoit

  • Ringer is worth 3 points

Ringer Topped by Opponent
  • Worth 3 points for top Quoit only

  • Worth 6 points (must be thrown by same thrower)
