  • Kozhikode (Calicut) was the capital of the
    Zamorins of erstwhile Malabar and an important
    commercial city from ancient times
  • It has been recorded in history that the name
    Kozhikode derived from the terms Kalikuthu
    of the Arabs and Calicuttu of the Britishers.
    Another version says Koyil kotta or
    Kallukettu later came to be known as Kozhikode
  • The famous traveller of yesteryears, Ibn Bathutha
    described Kozhikode as one of the major ports in
    that time

  • The city owes for its progress and prosperity to
    the Zamorins who ruled Kozhikode since 1442.
    Calicut came to be called the 'City of Zamorins'
  • Timber trade of Kallai, which was once worlds
    second largest, and the sprawling trade of hill
    produce at Big Bazaar were the icons of
    commercial glory of the city
  • The first industry commenced in the city is the
    Thiruvannur Cotton Mills, in 1884

  • Nicholo Kondi is the first European to visit
    Kozhikode
  • The visit of Vasco da Gama is regarded as an
    important event which led to the cause of the
    invasion of India by foreign powers. The famous
    Portuguese sailor set his feet first in the year
    1498 at Kappad, 17 Kms away from the city
  • Kozhikode had a crucial role In the history of
    Indian independence

  • Kozhikode was the arena of freedom fighters of
    national freedom movement such as Muhammed
    Abdurahiman Sahib, K.Kelappan, E.Moidu Maulavi,
    EMS, A.V.Kuttymalu Amma and others
  • Kozhikode also occupied the prime centre in salt
    sathyagraha movement
  • Beypore at Kozhikode is renowned for its Manchi
    and unique Uru (large wooden country boats) and
    the Khalasis, who are specialised in hauling
    heavy wrecks which even hydraulic crane fail to
    do.Their role in helping the victims of train
    tragedy at Perumon is outstanding

  • Kozhikode Municipality was formed on July 3rd
    1866 on the strength of the Town Improvement Act
    promulgated by the erstwhile Madras Province
  • The Municipal body included nominated members
    with the Collector of Malabar as its President.
    District Superintendent of Police, Asst. Surgeon,
    a representative from European community, two
    from Anglo Indian community, one Parsi, one
    Muslim and four others were included in the
    administrative body. Executive Engineer was ex
    officio member
  • The first council was on 12.07.1866

  • The law of District Municipalities 1884 was a
    milestone in the development of Municipalities in
    the state.
  • This law paved the way for election, in which ¾
    of the councillors were directly elected by the
    tax payers who would in turn elect the chairmen.
  • Paid Secretaries were appointed in the
    Municipalities consequent to the amendment
    introduced in 1897

  • As per the15th amendment introduced to the Act
    in 1933 Municipal Commissioners were appointed as
    Executive Officers
  • The population of the Municipality at the time of
    its inception was 36602, having an area 10.9
    sq.miles
  • Upholding the nationalist thoughts of the people
    of Kozhikode, the Municipal Council passed a
    resolution supporting the Indian Freedom
    Struggle. Following this, the Council was
    dismissed in 1942
  • Kozhikode Corporation was constituted in 1962 by
    annexing adjacent Panchayats, as per the Calicut
    City Municipality Act 1961

  • The extent of the Corporation comes to 84.232
    Sq.Kms
  • Kozhikode Corporation is the only ULB in the
    state getting revenue from timber tax
  • With the elevation of status, the City
    Corporation has formulated a number of projects
    aimed at integrated development of the city
  • The four storied building housing the office of
    Kozhikode Corporation, which faces the Arabian
    Sea is the largest and most convenient in the
    State

  • The Moffusil Bus stand in the city is the largest
    of its kind in the state and is well maintained
    and congestion free.
  • The Corporation owns a stadium of international
    standards
  • The Mananchira Square constructed in tune with
    the heritage of Kerala and situated in the heart
    of the city is a unique one, attracting
    tourists. It is an ideal open space for leisuring
    for the city dwellers as well. The square is
    properly maintained ever since it was dedicated
    to the public over a decade ago.

  • The RCH project, aimed at helping the poor,
    implemented with the help of world bank is an
    exemplary venture in the health front. As many as
    19 dispensaries are presently functioning across
    the city.
  • A fool proof waste management system, first and
    best of its kind in the State, is in place. This
    Model Solid Waste Management System is
    implemented with the help of the Ministry of
    Forest Environment, Govt. of India and the
    State Pollution Control Board

  • The Mananchira, the artificial pond constructed
    as early as in 1553 is the biggest fresh water
    body in the heart of the city which help to
    mitigate the acute water shortage during the
    hottest summer. The pond seldom dries up.
  • Consequent to the devolving of power through
    decentralisation the Corporation took up and
    implemented umpteen number of projects in various
    fields
  • As many as 20 Mini Water Projects were
    implemented by the Corporation with public
    participation during the period from 1996 to 2000

  • Tagore Centenary Hall with centralised air
    conditioning and acoustic system is a valuable
    asset of the Corporation
  • Kozhikode Corporation has been adjudged twice as
    the best Corporation in the State by the Kerala
    Government
  • Kozhikode Corporation secured Green City Award
    for cleanliness from Mumbai based organisation,
    Plast India Foundation in 2005. Kozhikode was
    selected for this award from among 32 cities
    across India
  • Land acquisition has been initiated for setting
    up a modern slaughter house

  • Action has been taken to set up a modern
    Amusement Park at Mananchira square, IT Park at
    Beach, Market complex at Kalluthankadavu on Build
    Operate Transfer basis
  • Shopping complexes are constructed across the
    city and rented out for augmenting the resources
    of the Corporation
  • The main source of income for the Corporation is
    from Property Tax, Profession Tax, Rent on land
    and buildings, D O licences fee etc. In the
    current financial year the income expected from
    these sources is Rs.18.5
    Cr.,Rs.4.5 Cr.,9.5 Cr. Rs.1.75 Cr. respectively

  • The Year long celebrations to mark the 140th
    anniversary of the city becoming a Muncipality
    began last year with the formal inauguration of
    the festivities by the Honble Speaker of Lok
    Sabha on 7th October 2006.
  • Action has already began to implement
    e-governance in a phased manner
  • A drive to become plastic free city was initiated
    by the Corporation in August 2006, much ahead
    the State formulated plans in this regard

  • The Corporation has initiated hopeful steps to
    become a modern urban self government and is on
    the threshold of a qualitative change to provide
    speedy and effective service delivery to the
    public
