Collection Process
  • UPL station is setup and the UPL is ready to
    start processing donors.
  • Note neatness and working space - avoid table-top
    clutter.

  • Donor approaches the UPL station when ready to
    provide a specimen.
  • Donor hands the UPL his/her ID Card.

  • The UPL initiates the bottle label, using the
    soldiers ID Card.
  • During this time the donor will remove excess
    outer garments.

  • The UPL Initiates the DD Form 2624.

  • The UPL initiates the Unit Ledger.
  • The UPL writes both the soldiers name and
    observers name on the ledger.

  • The UPL removes a new collection bottle from the
    box and replaces it with the ID Card.

Female donors also receive a wide mouth
collection cup.

Once in the latrine The observer will direct the
donor to wash his/her hands with water
only. Note Observer must continue to maintain
eye contact with the Specimen bottle

The donor will move to the appropriate facility
to collect the specimen. The observer briefs the
donor on how to collect the specimen, to insure
direct observation.

The observer will directly observe the urine
leaving the body and entering the specimen bottle
or wide mouth collection cup.

Female Donors Will pour the specimen from the
wide mouth collection cup into the specimen
bottle. The observer must watch this procedure.

Female donors Will dump the excess
specimen from the wide mouth collection cup into
the commode.

The donor will then recap the specimen, ensuring
that the cap is secure.

Female donors Will rinse out the wide mouth
collection cup with tap water and then dispose of
it. Note Observer must continue to maintain eye
contact with the Specimen bottle

The donor may now wash his/her hands with soap
and water. The Observer and Donor must continue
to maintain eye contact with the specimen bottle

The donor and observer will walk back to the UPL
Station. The donor will walk in front with the
specimen held above his/her shoulder.

At the UPL Station The donor will hand the
specimen to the UPL. Both donor and observer will
stand fast, until the donor is released.

The UPL will inspect the specimen for possible
adulteration, ensure the cap is secure, and
ensure there is at least 30 ml of urine.

The UPL will then initial the bottle label. The
initials signify that he/she received the
specimen from the donor, checked it for possible
adulteration, ensured the cap was secure, and
placed tamper evident tape across the cap.

The UPL will remove the donors ID Card from the
collection box and replace it with the specimen.

The observer signs the Unit Ledger The
signature verifies that he/she complied with the
collection process, directly observed the soldier
provide the specimen, and maintained eye contact
with the specimen until it was sealed with tamper
evident tape and placed in the collection box.

The donor now signs the Unit Ledger. The
signature verifies that he/she provided the urine
in the specimen bottle, observed the specimens
being sealed with tamper evident tape, and placed
in the collection box.

The UPL returns the donors ID Card to him/her
and release the donor from testing. The Observer
is now ready to observe another Donor.
