CIS 112 - EDUCATIONAL APPLICATIONS OF TECHNOLOGY
(2 Units)
  • This course will provide the student with many
    educational applications of technology, including
    multimedia, Internet skills, graphics, research,
    video, audio, presentation and computer skills,
    basic networking processes, downloads, software
    resources, basic troubleshooting skills,
    scanners, and basic hardware and software
    evaluations.

Credit/Grade Option
  • This class is a CR/NC option class.
  • Choosing Graded/Credit/No Credit option
  • Grade of C or better Credit
  • Grade of D or lower No Credit
  • Be cautious in using Credit/No Credit. You can
    only take a limited number if units by C/NC. Save
    it for the really difficult classes where you may
    need it.

  • Thanksgiving, November 23-26 Thursday and Friday
  • If a holiday falls on Friday, then Saturday and
    Sunday classes will NOT meet.
  • If the holiday falls on Monday, then Saturday and
    Sunday classes WILL meet.
  • If a holiday falls on both Friday and Monday,
    Saturday and Sunday classes will NOT meet.

If you need to drop a class!In person, by mail
or phone
  • Students who never attend a class or stop
    attending a class at any time, MUST officially
    withdraw themselves by the stated deadlines to
    avoid grade/fee penalties .
  • Students may contact the Student Records Office
    in person (during business hours), by mail
    (postmarked by the US Postmaster by stated
    deadline), or via the Touch-tone Telephone System
    (see dates above) at (714) 438-8222 to withdraw
    from a class/es.

Printing
  • You need an account and a print card to print
    out material here at the OCC Computing Center.
  • The card is 1.00 the first time. This is .50
    for the card and .50 worth of printing.
  • Laser BW is .05 per page
  • Laser Color is .50 per page
  • When empty you recharge it with 1.00
  • When you send a print job it will vanish if you
    do not print it out in 5-6 hours No cost

Storage of Files
  • You can store your files on the student network.
    100 MB and it is backed up daily. But
  • It would be wise to invest in a Thumb-Drive to
    store and move your files back and forth.
  • Cost and size
  • From 5 for 128 MB to 30 for 1 GB or more, works
    with both Mac and Windows from Windows 98 on to
    ME, 2000 and XP
  • Consider a U3 enabled drive
  • Look for sales in the Sunday paper

The Class
  • A practical approach to understanding and
    applying technology to many aspects of education,
    teaching and research. This means that you will
    be researching, creating and using projects that
    will be of real use to you. This class is also
    very applicable for non-teachers.
  • The final project will reflect that concept in
    that it will use many of the skills you will
    gain..
  • More importantly, this class will be useful and
    hopefully fun. Handout

Academic Honesty
  • Cheating will result in sanctions including but
    not limited to failure or zero points, on the
    assignment in question, incident reporting to the
    college and or failure of class.
  • Do not compromise your student standing by
    copying or using other students work. This
    includes information from the Internet unless
    otherwise noted in class.

Attendance Policy
  • You are expected to be here in class and
    participate. Information for exams and projects
    comes from both the text and from classroom
    lecture. We will also have in-class exams
    available only here.
  • Attendance will add to your total points in
    class. This can make the difference between an
    A and a B.
  • Projects created in class will be submitted for
    points. There is no makeup for in-class projects

  • There are a lot of ways that your Internet
    experience can turn sour. Sometimes without your
    knowledge. Personal information and the stability
    of your computer are at risk. Methods include
  • Viruses, Worms and Trojan Horses
  • Spy-ware, Mal-ware and Phishing email
    scams
  • In our class we will show you sources to protect
    yourself from these attacks

Access 2003 Software
  • As a member of this class you can get a free copy
    of Microsoft Access 2003 from the Computing
    Center.
  • If you have the Student/Academic version of
    Microsoft Office it does not have Access in it.

Net-Ops
  • We have a system in place to limit your access to
    the Internet, games, etc With it we can control
    your computer during class for demonstrations and
    assignments.
  • We can constrain you to a certain program or site
    if needed
  • Please do not play games or be surfing during the
    lectures.

Logging on to your account
  • Make sure that you can log on, remember the
    password is Case Sensitive
  • Go to my computer and make sure you can find your
    U Network Drive.
  • It should have your Student ID Number as the
    first part of the drive name
  • Double click to access it, Save all your files to
    this drive, copy to a Flash Drive or email to
    take home

Student Network Drive
  • You have access to a 100MB storage space on the
    campus network. You must have a user account and
    password to use this space. We will provide
  • This is the easiest and most secure place to save
    projects and files. USE IT!
  • You CANNOT get to this drive from home at this
    time

  • Do not save to the Desktop. It will be gone next
    time. We may save files to the L drive as need
    arises.

  • A floppy, Thumb Drive or
  • E-mail to yourself and open at home
  • If you need an email account see me...

Projects and Pictures
  • We will be taking a digital picture for your Web
    page and projects.

  • We will start projects tonight. The lectures will
    be available to you from my network drive on
    CC-Faculty under Faculty 5 and on the Web
  • You are encouraged to follow along on the
    PowerPoint lecture and copy it to take home for
    review.
  • Classroom Projects, called IC Projects, may count
    toward your grade.
