Title: Reference and Research Lesson 2
1Reference and Research Lesson 2
2A Prize for the Planet
PALO ALTO, California (Achieve3000, November 5,
2007). Al Gore was vice president of the U.S.
from 1993 to 2001. He has also spent years
studying global warming. In October, Gore was
honored for his work on climate change. He was
awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Gore shared the
prize with a group of scientists. The scientists
studied global warming. Then, they wrote reports
about it. The reports were thousands of pages
long. Most people did not read the reports. Why
not? They were too hard to understand. Al Gore
took the reports. He explained global warming. He
made it easier for people to understand.
3A Prize for the Planet (continued)
Gore and the scientists say that the planet is
getting warmer. How? Gases are given off by
factories, cars, and other machines. The gases
stay in the atmosphere where they trap sunlight.
This causes the planet to become warmer. This
warming could melt the ice caps at the poles. It
might cause flooding, drought, and strong storms
in years to come. Not everyone agrees about
global warming. Some people say that there is not
enough proof. Others say that the planet might be
getting warmer. However, they say it is because
of natural climate changes. Still, Gore
believes in global warming. He has written a book
about it. He has even made a movie. Gore says
that he will continue to tell people about global
warming.
