Vocabulary

• Adolescence The period from childhood to
  adulthood.
• Puberty the time when a person begins to
  develop certain traits of adults of his or her
  own gender.
• Hormones Chemical substances that are produced
  that in glands and help regulate many of your
  bodys functions.

• Sex characteristics The traits related to a
  persons gender.
• Gametes Reproductive cells
• Cognition The ability to reason and think out
  abstract solutions.

Changes that take place during adolescence.

• Females breasts develop, waistline narrows,
  hips widen, body fat increases, menstruation
  starts
• Males facial hair appears, voice deepens,
  shoulders broaden, muscles develop, hairline
  begins to recede
• Both Body hair appears, permanent teeth grow
  in, perspiration increases
• Want to achieve emotional independence.

Puberty

• Occurs between ages 12 and 18
• Physical changes sex characteristics
• Each individual changes at their own rate

Mental Changes

• Cognition increases, you become increasingly able
  to solve problems
• Vocabulary increases
• By age 6, brain is 95 of adult size

Emotional Changes

• Emotional roller coaster, high one day, down the
  next
• Intense feelings can be overwhelming

Social Changes

• A need to make friends
• Acceptance into a peer group
• Strong friendships develop when people realize
  they have the same goals, experiences, and values
