Title: Understanding Baptisms
1Understanding Baptisms
2Acts 111-18
- Now the apostles and the brethren who were
throughout Judea heard that the Gentiles also had
received the word of God. And when Peter came up
to Jerusalem, those who were circumcised took
issue with him, saying, " You went to
uncircumcised men and ate with them." - But Peter began speaking and proceeded to
explain to them in orderly sequence, saying,
3Acts 115-7
- "I was in the city of Joppa praying and in a
trance I saw a vision, an object coming down like
a great sheet lowered by four corners from the
sky and it came right down to me, and when I had
fixed my gaze on it and was observing it I saw
the four-footed animals of the earth and the wild
beasts and the crawling creatures and the birds
of the air. - "I also heard a voice saying to me, 'Get up,
Peter kill and eat.'
4Acts 118-11
- "But I said, 'By no means, Lord, for nothing
unholy or unclean has ever entered my mouth.'
"But a voice from heaven answered a second time,
' What God has cleansed, no longer consider
unholy.' "This happened three times, and
everything was drawn back up into the sky. - "And behold, at that moment three men appeared at
the house in which we were staying, having been
sent to me from Caesarea.
5Acts 1112-14
- " The Spirit told me to go with them without
misgivings. These six brethren also went with me
and we entered the man's house. - "And he reported to us how he had seen the angel
standing in his house, and saying, 'Send to Joppa
and have Simon, who is also called Peter, brought
here and he will speak words to you by which
you will be saved, you and all your household.'
6Acts 1115-16
- "And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell
upon them just as He did upon us at the
beginning. - "And I remembered the word of the Lord, how He
used to say, ' John baptized with water, but you
will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.'
7Acts 1117-18
- "Therefore if God gave to them the same gift as
He gave to us also after believing in the Lord
Jesus Christ, who was I that I could stand in
God's way?" - When they heard this, they quieted down and
glorified God, saying, "Well then, God has
granted to the Gentiles also the repentance that
leads to life."
8Previously in Acts 1044-48
- While Peter was still speaking these words, the
Holy Spirit fell upon all those who were
listening to the message. All the circumcised
believers who came with Peter were amazed,
because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been
poured out on the Gentiles also. For they were
hearing them speaking with tongues and exalting
God. Then Peter answered, - "Surely no one can refuse the water for these to
be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit
just as we did, can he?" And he ordered them to
be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then
they asked him to stay on for a few days.
9What Did Jesus Command Them to do?
- Go therefore and make disciples of all the
nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father
and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them
to observe all that I commanded you - Matthew 2819-20 NASU
10Peter Preached it on Day of Pentecost
- Peter said to them, "Repent, and each of you be
baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the
forgiveness of your sins and you will receive
the gift of the Holy Spirit. - "For the promise is for you and your children
and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord
our God will call to Himself." - Acts 238-39 NASU
11This is Christianity 101
- Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings
about Christ and go on to maturity, not laying
again the foundation of repentance from acts that
lead to death, and of faith in God, instruction
about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the
resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. - Hebrews 61-2 NIV
12Covenant to not flood-Sign rainbow
- Then God told Noah and his sons, "I solemnly
promise you and your children-that I will never
again send another flood to destroy the earth. - And I seal this promise with this sign I have
placed my rainbow in the clouds as a sign of my
promise until the end of time, to you and to all
the earth. - Genesis 98-13 TLB
13Gods Covenant with Israel
- "I will establish My covenant between Me and you,
And I will multiply you exceedingly." - Genesis 172 NASU
- "And you shall be circumcised in the flesh of
your foreskin, and it shall be the sign of the
covenant between Me and you. - Genesis 1711-12 NASU
14Water Baptism is an outward sign after you
believe in your heart
- But when they believed Philip preaching the good
news about the kingdom of God and the name of
Jesus Christ, they were being baptized, men and
women alike. - Acts 812 NASU
15We Identify with Jesus Death, Burial, and
Resurrection
- and in Him you were also circumcised with a
circumcision made without hands, in the removal
of the body of the flesh by the circumcision of
Christ having been buried with Him in baptism,
in which you were also raised up with Him through
faith in the working of God, who raised Him from
the dead. - Colossians 211-12 NASU
16How Should We do it?
- The word baptism comes from the Greek word
baptizo (bap-tid'-zo) to immerse, submerge to
make overwhelmed (i.e. fully wet) - After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately
from the water and behold, the heavens were
opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending
as a dove and lighting on Him, - Matthew 316 NASU
17Does it Save Us?
- Baptism doesnt save you, but is a sign of the
covenant you have made with God. - ButWe are commanded to be baptized so if you
refuse to be baptized what does this say about
the covenant you have made?
18What about Baby Baptism?
- There is nothing in the bible about it although
we do see baby dedication - Obviously a baby cant repent and believe in
Jesus. - So the baby just gets a bath for Jesus ?
19What is Baptism With The Holy Spirit?
- The word baptism comes from the Greek word
baptizo (bap-tid'-zo) to immerse, submerge to
make overwhelmed (i.e. fully wet) - So We are immersed and submerged into the Holy
Spirit, and overwhelmed by Him!
20John Promised It
- Matthew 311
- "As for me, I baptize you with water for
repentance, but He who is coming after me is
mightier than I, and I am not fit to remove His
sandals He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit
and fire. - Mark 18
- "I baptized you with water but He will baptize
you with the Holy Spirit."
21- Luke 316
- John answered and said to them all, "As for me,
I baptize you with water but One is coming who
is mightier than I, and I am not fit to untie the
thong of His sandals He will baptize you with
the Holy Spirit and fire. - John 133-34
- "I did not recognize Him, but He who sent me to
baptize in water said to me, 'He upon whom you
see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him,
this is the One who baptizes in the Holy Spirit.'
"I myself have seen, and have testified that
this is the Son of God."
22Joel Prophesied about it
- Joel 228-29
- "It will come about after this That I will pour
out My Spirit on all mankind And your sons and
daughters will prophesy, Your old men will dream
dreams, Your young men will see visions. "Even on
the male and female servants I will pour out My
Spirit in those days.
23Accounts of Baptism in the Holy
Spirit
24The Disciples at Day of Pentecost
- When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all
together in one place. And suddenly there came
from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind,
and it filled the whole house where they were
sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of
fire distributing themselves, and they rested on
each one of them. - And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and
began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit
was giving them utterance. - Acts 21-4 NASU
25Believers in Samaria
- Now when the apostles in Jerusalem heard that
Samaria had received the word of God, they sent
them Peter and John, who came down and prayed for
them that they might receive the Holy Spirit. For
He had not yet fallen upon any of them they had
simply been baptized in the name of the Lord
Jesus. - Then they began laying their hands on them, and
they were receiving the Holy Spirit. - Acts 814-17 NASU
26Paul the Apostle
- So Ananias departed and entered the house, and
after laying his hands on him said, " Brother
Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the
road by which you were coming, has sent me so
that you may regain your sight and be filled with
the Holy Spirit." - And immediately there fell from his eyes
something like scales, and he regained his sight,
and he got up and was baptized and he took food
and was strengthened. - Acts 917-19 NASU
27Disciples in Ephesus
- It happened that while Apollos was at Corinth,
Paul passed through the upper country and came to
Ephesus, and found some disciples. He said to
them, " - Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you
believed?" And they said to him, "No, we have not
even heard whether there is a Holy Spirit." And
he said, "Into what then were you baptized?" And
they said, " Into John's baptism."
28- Paul said, " John baptized with the baptism of
repentance, telling the people to believe in Him
who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus." - When they heard this, they were baptized in the
name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid
his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on
them, and they began speaking with tongues and
prophesying. There were in all about twelve men. - Acts 191-7
29- Tongues are an outward sign of the power that God
has placed inside of you. - but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit
has come upon you and you shall be My witnesses
both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria,
and even to the remotest part of the earth." - Acts 18
30Do You Have to Speak in Tongues?
- You dont have to speak in tongues, you get to if
you want. - You can be baptized in the Holy Spirit and not
speak in tongues. - But you would be dumb not to speak in tongues
31Because They Are Given to Bless You
- For one who speaks in a tongue does not speak to
men but to God for no one understands, but in
his spirit he speaks mysteries. But one who
prophesies speaks to men for edification and
exhortation and consolation. - One who speaks in a tongue edifies himself but
one who prophesies edifies the church. - 1 Corinthians 142-5
32God Wants to Bless You
- "So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to
you seek, and you will find knock, and it will
be opened to you. "For everyone who asks,
receives and he who seeks, finds and to him who
knocks, it will be opened. - "Now suppose one of you fathers is asked by his
son for a fish he will not give him a snake
instead of a fish, will he? "Or if he is asked
for an egg, he will not give him a scorpion, will
he? "If you then, being evil, know how to give
good gifts to your children, how much more will
your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to
those who ask Him?" - Luke 119-13
