Title: Understanding Our Genetic Code

1
Understanding Our Genetic Code
  • Giving and Serving

2
We Have Covered So Far
  • 1. Jesus Christ is Savior and Lord
  • 2. We Need the Word and the Spirit
  • 3. We Must Repent and Believe
  • 4. Forgiveness and Restitution
  • 5. Be Fruitful and Multiply
  • 6. Evangelism and Discipleship

3
Why Jesus Came
  • Mark 1035-45
  • Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came
over and spoke to him. "Teacher," they said, "we
want you to do us a favor."
  • "What is your request?" he asked.
  • They replied, "When you sit on your glorious
throne, we want to sit in places of honor next to
you, one on your right and the other on your
    left."

4
  • 38 But Jesus said to them, "You don't know what
you are asking! Are you able to drink from the
bitter cup of suffering I am about to drink? Are
you able to be baptized with the baptism of
suffering I must be baptized with?"
  • 39 "Oh yes," they replied, "we are able!"
  • Then Jesus told them, "You will indeed drink from
my bitter cup and be baptized with my baptism of
suffering. 40 But I have no right to say who will
sit on my right or my left. God has prepared
those places for the ones he has chosen."

5
  • 41 When the ten other disciples heard what James
and John had asked, they were indignant. 42 So
Jesus called them together and said, "You know
that the rulers in this world lord it over their
people, and officials flaunt their authority over
    those under them.
  • But among you it will be different. Whoever wants
to be a leader among you must be your servant, 44
and whoever wants to be first among you must be
    the slave of everyone else.
  • 45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served
but to serve others and to give his life as a
    ransom for many."

Only a life lived for others is worth living

  • Albert Einstein (1879-1955)
  • (German born American Physicist who developed the
special and general theories of relativity. Nobel
    Prize for Physics in 1921.)

7
  • "In everything I showed you that by working hard
in this manner you must help the weak and
remember the words of the Lord Jesus, that He
Himself said, 'It is more blessed to give than to
    receive.'"
  • Acts 2035

8
  • If a person gets his attitude toward money
straight, it will help straighten out almost
every other area in his life.

9
Jesus on MoneyMatthew 624-34
  • "No one can serve two masters. For you will hate
one and love the other you will be devoted to
one and despise the other. You cannot serve both
    God and money.

10
  • 25 "That is why I tell you not to worry about
everyday lifewhether you have enough food and
drink, or enough clothes to wear. Isn't life more
than food, and your body more than clothing? 26
Look at the birds. They don't plant or harvest or
store food in barns, for your heavenly Father
feeds them. And aren't you far more valuable to
    him than they are?
  • 27 Can all your worries add a single moment to
    your life?

11
  • 28 "And why worry about your clothing? Look at
the lilies of the field and how they grow. They
don't work or make their clothing, 29 yet Solomon
in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully
    as they are.
  • 30 And if God cares so wonderfully for
wildflowers that are here today and thrown into
the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for
you. Why do you have so little faith?

12
  • 31 "So don't worry about these things, saying,
'What will we eat? What will we drink? What will
we wear?' 32 These things dominate the thoughts
of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already
knows all your needs. 33 Seek the Kingdom of God
above all else, and live righteously, and he will
    give you everything you need.
  • 34 "So don't worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow
will bring its own worries. Today's trouble is
    enough for today.

13
  • From what we get, we can make a living what we
    give, however, makes a life.
  •   -Arthur Ashe (1943-1993) (American social
Activist and Tennis Player, the first black
winner of a major men's singles championship.
Died after contracting AIDS through a blood
    transfusion)

14
2 Corinthians 96-9
  • Now this I say, he who sows sparingly will also
reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will
also reap bountifully. Each one must do just as
he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or
under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
  • And God is able to make all grace abound to you,
so that always having all sufficiency in
everything, you may have an abundance for every
    good deed

15
Basic Financial principles
16
God Owns Everything
  • The earth is the Lord's, and all it contains, the
world, and those who dwell in it.
  • Psalms 241

17
  • "For every beast of the forest is Mine, The
    cattle on a thousand hills.
  • "I know every bird of the mountains, And
everything that moves in the field is Mine.
  • "If I were hungry I would not tell you, For the
world is Mine, and all it contains.
  • Psalms 5010-12

18
  • 'The silver is Mine and the gold is Mine,'
    declares the Lord of hosts.
  • Hag 28-9
  • "The land must never be sold on a permanent
basis, for the land belongs to me. You are only
foreigners and tenant farmers working for me.
  • Lev 2523

19
1 Chronicles 2911-15
  • Yours, O Lord, is the greatness, the power, the
glory, the victory, and the majesty. Everything
in the heavens and on earth is yours, O Lord, and
this is your kingdom. We adore you as the one who
    is over all things.
  • 12 Wealth and honor come from you alone, for you
rule over everything. Power and might are in your
hand, and at your discretion people are made
    great and given strength.

20
  • 13 "O our God, we thank you and praise your
glorious name! 14 But who am I, and who are my
people, that we could give anything to you?
Everything we have has come from you, and we give
you only what you first gave us!
  • 15 We are here for only a moment, visitors and
strangers in the land as our ancestors were
before us. Our days on earth are like a passing
shadow, gone so soon without a trace.

21
You Are A Steward of Gods Stuff
  • Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything
you do. Try to please them all the time, not just
when they are watching you. Serve them sincerely
because of your reverent fear of the Lord. 23
Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you
were working for the Lord rather than for people.
  • 24 Remember that the Lord will give you an
inheritance as your reward, and that the Master
    you are serving is Christ.
  • Colossians 322-24

22
Matthew 2514-30
  • "Again, the Kingdom of Heaven can be illustrated
by the story of a man going on a long trip. He
called together his servants and entrusted his
money to them while he was gone. 15 He gave five
bags of silver to one, two bags of silver to
another, and one bag of silver to the
lastdividing it in proportion to their
abilities. He then left on his trip.
  • 16 "The servant who received the five bags of
silver began to invest the money and earned five
more. 17 The servant with two bags of silver also
went to work and earned two more. 18 But the
servant who received the one bag of silver dug a
hole in the ground and hid the master's money.

23
  • 19 "After a long time their master returned from
his trip and called them to give an account of
how they had used his money. 20 The servant to
whom he had entrusted the five bags of silver
came forward with five more and said, 'Master,
you gave me five bags of silver to invest, and I
    have earned five more.'
  • 21 "The master was full of praise. 'Well done, my
good and faithful servant. You have been faithful
in handling this small amount, so now I will give
you many more responsibilities. Let's celebrate
    together!'

24
  • 22 "The servant who had received the two bags of
silver came forward and said, 'Master, you gave
me two bags of silver to invest, and I have
    earned two more.'
  • 23 "The master said, 'Well done, my good and
faithful servant. You have been faithful in
handling this small amount, so now I will give
you many more responsibilities. Let's celebrate
    together!'

25
  • 24 "Then the servant with the one bag of silver
came and said, 'Master, I knew you were a harsh
man, harvesting crops you didn't plant and
gathering crops you didn't cultivate. 25 I was
afraid I would lose your money, so I hid it in
the earth. Look, here is your money back.'
  • 26 "But the master replied, 'You wicked and lazy
servant! If you knew I harvested crops I didn't
plant and gathered crops I didn't cultivate, 27
why didn't you deposit my money in the bank? At
least I could have gotten some interest on it.'

26
  • 28 "Then he ordered, 'Take the money from this
servant, and give it to the one with the ten bags
of silver. 29 To those who use well what they are
given, even more will be given, and they will
have an abundance. But from those who do nothing,
even what little they have will be taken away.
  • 30 Now throw this useless servant into outer
darkness, where there will be weeping and
    gnashing of teeth.'

27
Martin Luther (1483-1546)
  • People go through three conversions the
conversion of their head, their heart and their
pocketbook. Unfortunately, not all at the same
    time.

28
Love god not money
29
1 Timothy 66-10
  • Yet true godliness with contentment is itself
great wealth. 7 After all, we brought nothing
with us when we came into the world, and we can't
take anything with us when we leave it. 8 So if
we have enough food and clothing, let us be
    content.
  • 9 But people who long to be rich fall into
temptation and are trapped by many foolish and
harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and
destruction. 10 For the love of money is the root
of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving
money, have wandered from the true faith and
    pierced themselves with many sorrows.

30
It Never Satisfies
  • Ecclesiastes 510-69
  • 10 Those who love money will never have enough.
How meaningless to think that wealth brings true
happiness! 11 The more you have, the more people
come to help you spend it. So what good is
wealthexcept perhaps to watch it slip through
    your fingers!
  • 12 People who work hard sleep well, whether they
eat little or much. But the rich seldom get a
    good night's sleep.

31
  • 13 There is another serious problem I have seen
under the sun. Hoarding riches harms the saver.
14 Money is put into risky investments that turn
sour, and everything is lost. In the end, there
is nothing left to pass on to one's children. 15
We all come to the end of our lives as naked and
empty-handed as on the day we were born. We can't
    take our riches with us.
  • 16 And this, too, is a very serious problem.
People leave this world no better off than when
they came. All their hard work is for
nothinglike working for the wind. 17 Throughout
their lives, they live under a cloudfrustrated,
    discouraged, and angry.

32
  • 18 Even so, I have noticed one thing, at least,
that is good. It is good for people to eat,
drink, and enjoy their work under the sun during
the short life God has given them, and to accept
    their lot in life.
  • 19 And it is a good thing to receive wealth from
God and the good health to enjoy it. To enjoy
your work and accept your lot in lifethis is
indeed a gift from God. 20 God keeps such people
so busy enjoying life that they take no time to
    brood over the past.

33
  • 6 There is another serious tragedy I have seen
under the sun, and it weighs heavily on humanity.
2 God gives some people great wealth and honor
and everything they could ever want, but then he
doesn't give them the chance to enjoy these
things. They die, and someone else, even a
stranger, ends up enjoying their wealth! This is
    meaninglessa sickening tragedy.

34
  • 3 A man might have a hundred children and live to
be very old. But if he finds no satisfaction in
life and doesn't even get a decent burial, it
would have been better for him to be born dead. 4
His birth would have been meaningless, and he
would have ended in darkness. He wouldn't even
have had a name, 5 and he would never have seen
the sun or known of its existence. Yet he would
have had more peace than in growing up to be an
    unhappy man.
  • 6 He might live a thousand years twice over but
still not find contentment. And since he must die
like everyone elsewell, what's the use?

35
  • 7 All people spend their lives scratching for
food, but they never seem to have enough. 8 So
are wise people really better off than fools? Do
poor people gain anything by being wise and
knowing how to act in front of others?
  • 9 Enjoy what you have rather than desiring what
you don't have. Just dreaming about nice things
    is meaninglesslike chasing the wind.

36
Proverbs 308-9
  • First, help me never to tell a lie. Second,
give me neither poverty nor riches! Give me just
    enough to satisfy my needs.
  • For if I grow rich, I may deny you and say, "Who
is the Lord? And if I am too poor, I may steal
and thus insult God's holy name.

37
  • He who trusts in his riches will fall, But the
righteous will flourish like the green leaf.
  • Proverbs 1128 NASU
  • Trust in your money and down you go! But the
godly flourish like leaves in spring.
  • Proverbs 1128 NLT

38
1 Timothy 617-19
  • Teach those who are rich in this world not to be
proud and not to trust in their money, which is
so unreliable. Their trust should be in God, who
richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment.
  • 18 Tell them to use their money to do good. They
should be rich in good works and generous to
those in need, always being ready to share with
others. 19 By doing this they will be storing up
their treasure as a good foundation for the
future so that they may experience true life.

39
Mark 414-20
  • 14 The farmer plants seed by taking God's word
to others. 15 The seed that fell on the footpath
represents those who hear the message, only to
have Satan come at once and take it away.
  • 16 The seed on the rocky soil represents those
who hear the message and immediately receive it
with joy. 17 But since they don't have deep
roots, they don't last long. They fall away as
soon as they have problems or are persecuted for
    believing God's word.

40
  • 18 The seed that fell among the thorns represents
others who hear God's word, 19 but all too
quickly the message is crowded out by the worries
of this life, the lure of wealth, and the desire
for other things, so no fruit is produced.
  • 20 And the seed that fell on good soil represents
those who hear and accept God's word and produce
a harvest of thirty, sixty, or even a hundred
times as much as had been planted!"

41
  • "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on
earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where
    thieves break in and steal.
  • 20 "But store up for yourselves treasures in
heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and
where thieves do not break in or steal 21 for
where your treasure is, there your heart will be
    also.
  • Matthew 619-21

Understanding Our Genetic Code
  • Giving and Serving

43
  • If a person gets his attitude toward money
straight, it will help straighten out almost
every other area in his life.
  • Billy Graham

44
How Do We Get Money?
  • Right Actions

45
1. Work For It
  • Go to the ant, O sluggard, Observe her ways and
be wise, Which, having no chief, Officer or
ruler, Prepares her food in the summer And
gathers her provision in the harvest.
  • How long will you lie down, O sluggard? When will
you arise from your sleep? A little sleep, a
little slumber, A little folding of the hands to
rest" Your poverty will come in like a
vagabond And your need like an armed man.
    Proverbs 66-11

46
  • In all labor there is profit, But mere talk leads
    only to poverty.
  • Proverbs 1423

47
  • The sluggard does not plow after the autumn, So
he begs during the harvest and has nothing.
  • Proverbs 204

48
  • He who tills his land will have plenty of food,
But he who follows empty pursuits will have
    poverty in plenty.
  • Proverbs 2819 NASU
  • A hard worker has plenty of food, but a person
who chases fantasies ends up in poverty.
  • Proverbs 2819 NLT

49
If You Dont Work, You Dont Eat!
50
2 Thessalonians 36-13
  • Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our
Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep away from every
brother who leads an unruly life and not
according to the tradition which you received
    from us.
  • For you yourselves know how you ought to follow
our example, because we did not act in an
undisciplined manner among you, nor did we eat
anyone's bread without paying for it, but with
labor and hardship we kept working night and day
so that we would not be a burden to any of you

51
  • not because we do not have the right to this, but
in order to offer ourselves as a model for you,
so that you would follow our example.
  • For even when we were with you, we used to give
you this order if anyone is not willing to work,
then he is not to eat, either.

52
  • For we hear that some among you are leading an
undisciplined life, doing no work at all, but
    acting like busybodies.
  • Now such persons we command and exhort in the
Lord Jesus Christ to work in quiet fashion and
eat their own bread. But as for you, brethren, do
not grow weary of doing good.

53
2. Saving and Investing
  • The wise man saves for the future, but the
foolish man spends whatever he gets.
  • Proverbs 2120 TLB

54
John Wesley (1703 - 1791)
  • Make all you can, save all you can, give all you
    can.

55
Proverbs 223 NLT
  • A prudent person foresees danger and takes
    precautions.
  • The simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the
    consequences.

56
  • Saving 72 monthly may total 1,000,000 in 45
    years.
  • Savings goal may be reached early. Based on the
information you supplied your current savings
plan may be able to reach savings goal of
    1,000,000 in 42.0 years.
  • Adjusted for 3.10 inflation, 1,000,000 would be
worth 253,140 after 45 years in today's dollars.

3. Gifts and Inheritances
  • Here for this third time I am ready to come to
you, and I will not be a burden to you for I do
not seek what is yours, but you for children are
not responsible to save up for their parents, but
    parents for their children.
  • 2 Cor 1214-15

61
4. Wrong Ways (Stealing)
  • You shall not steal.
  • Exodus 2015
  • The wicked borrow and never repay, but the godly
    are generous givers.
  • Psalm 3721

62
Usury and Selfishness
  • "If one of your fellow Israelites falls into
poverty and cannot support himself, support him
as you would a foreigner or a temporary resident
and allow him to live with you.
  • Do not charge interest or make a profit at his
expense. Instead, show your fear of God by
letting him live with you as your relative.
Remember, do not charge interest on money you
lend him or make a profit on food you sell him.
  • Lev 2535-38

63
How We Spend Our Money
64
1. Provide for You and Yours
  • But if anyone does not provide for his own, and
especially for those of his household, he has
denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
  • 1 Timothy 58

65
2. Pay Your Debts
  • The rich rules over the poor, And the borrower
    becomes the lender's slave.
  • Proverbs 227
  • Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another
for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the
    law.
  • Romans 138-9

How We Give Our Money
67
  • We make a living by what we get, we make a life
    by what we give.
  • Sir Winston ChurchillBritish politician/Gangster
  • (1874 - 1965)

Only a life lived for others is worth living

  • Albert Einstein (1879-1955)
  • (German born American Physicist who developed the
special and general theories of relativity. Nobel
    Prize for Physics in 1921.)

Luke 1610-15
  • "If you are faithful in little things, you will
be faithful in large ones. But if you are
dishonest in little things, you won't be honest
    with greater responsibilities.
  • 11 And if you are untrustworthy about worldly
wealth, who will trust you with the true riches
of heaven? 12 And if you are not faithful with
other people's things, why should you be trusted
    with things of your own?

70
  • 13 "No one can serve two masters. For you will
hate one and love the other you will be devoted
to one and despise the other. You cannot serve
    both God and money."
  • 14 The Pharisees, who dearly loved their money,
heard all this and scoffed at him. 15 Then he
said to them, "You like to appear righteous in
public, but God knows your hearts. What this
world honors is detestable in the sight of God.

2 Corinthians 93-15
  • But I am sending these brothers to be sure you
really are ready, as I have been telling them,
and that your money is all collected. I don't
want to be wrong in my boasting about you. 4 We
would be embarrassednot to mention your own
    embarrassmentif some Macedonian believers came
with me and found that you weren't ready after
all I had told them! 5
  • So I thought I should send these brothers ahead
of me to make sure the gift you promised is
ready. But I want it to be a willing gift, not
    one given grudgingly.

72
  • 6 Remember thisa farmer who plants only a few
seeds will get a small crop. But the one who
plants generously will get a generous crop. 7 You
must each decide in your heart how much to give.
And don't give reluctantly or in response to
pressure. "For God loves a person who gives
cheerfully." 8 And God will generously provide
all you need. Then you will always have
everything you need and plenty left over to share
with others. 9 As the Scriptures say,
  • "They share freely and give generously to the
poor. Their good deeds will be remembered
    forever."

73
  • 10 For God is the one who provides seed for the
farmer and then bread to eat. In the same way, he
will provide and increase your resources and then
produce a great harvest of generosity in you.
  • 11 Yes, you will be enriched in every way so that
you can always be generous. And when we take your
gifts to those who need them, they will thank
    God.

74
  • 12 So two good things will result from this
ministry of givingthe needs of the believers in
Jerusalem will be met, and they will joyfully
    express their thanks to God.
  • 13 As a result of your ministry, they will give
glory to God. For your generosity to them and to
all believers will prove that you are obedient to
the Good News of Christ. 14 And they will pray
for you with deep affection because of the
overflowing grace God has given to you. 15 Thank
God for this gift too wonderful for words!

75
  • Now regarding your question about the money being
collected for God's people in Jerusalem. You
should follow the same procedure I gave to the
churches in Galatia. 2 On the first day of each
week, you should each put aside a portion of the
money you have earned. Don't wait until I get
there and then try to collect it all at once.
  • 1 Cor 161-3

Martin Luther (1483-1546)
  • People go through three conversions the
conversion of their head, their heart and their
pocketbook. Unfortunately, not all at the same
    time.
