3The Printing Press
4Printing and Publishing
- The printing press was invented by Johannes
Gutenberg in 1436, and completed in 1440. His
model of the printing press was a hand press, in
which ink was rolled over the elevated surfaces
of the movable hand-set block letters. The block
letters were held within a wooden form, and after
the ink had been applied, the form was pressed
against the paper. Gutenberg was also credited
with the printing of the worlds first book with
the movable type, the Gutenberg Bible. In the
Gutenberg Bible, each page had 42 lines on it.
The Bible was believed to have been completed in
1455.
5Global Impact
- The invention of the printing press was an event
that had many positive effects on society. For
one thing, without it, we wouldnt have nearly
half as many literate people as we do today.
Before the invention of the printing press, only
a very few privileged people would even have the
opportunity to learn to read and write. Also, we
wouldnt have very many books in circulation,
because they would all still be handwritten. With
the invention of the printing press, we have been
allowed to become a society where everyone has
the opportunity to become knowledgeable. While
the invention of the printing press started a
revolution in the printing of books, it also
promoted the rapid development in science, art,
and religion through communication of text.

6INTEGRATED CIRCUIT
7INTEGRATED CIRCUIT
8A World of Computers
- Basically, an integrated circuit is a
miniaturized circuit through which electric
currents can flow in a steady rate. Today,
integrated circuits are used in almost all
electronic equipments. Sometimes called a chip
or microchip, they have revolutionized the world
of electronics. - Integrated circuits are a very advanced
electric circuit. Its main function is to control
the current. Integrated circuits are commonly
used as amplifier, counter, computer memory,
timer, and microprocessor. - Integrated circuit was first invented by
Jack Kilby in 1958. - His idea was to make all the components of the
chip and the chip itself out of the same block of
semiconductor material. After presenting these
ideas to his coworkers, his boss liked the idea
so much he allowed Kilby to build a test version
of it. It worked out perfectly!
9Global Impact
- Integrated circuits have allowed us to
make products such as PCs and cell phones, and to
constantly improve them by making them smaller
and faster (the denser and smaller the chip is,
the less the amount of distance the signals have
to travel, therefore the faster the appliance).
If integrated circuits werent invented at all,
we would be living in a world impossible to
imagine. It would mean no cell phones, no
computers, no surround sound system for TV, and
many other things! Integrated circuits have also
opened up a completely new industry and field of
technology, giving thousands of people jobs
related to this amazing invention. -

10I don't think one can accurately measure the
historical effectiveness of a poem but one does
know, of course, that books influence
individuals and individuals, although they are
part of large economic and social processes,
influence history. Every mass is after all made
up of millions of individuals. Denise Levertov
