- La Crosse was first explored in 1680 by the
French. The area received its name when a group
of Native Americans were seen playing a game that
looked like La Crosse. - La Crosse was a major trading post, where both
water and land contributed to its success. Both
the lumber industry and the river commerce
contributed to the growth of the city, however in
the late 1800s both businesses began to decline.
The industry that came to La Crosses rescue was
the brewing business. Five breweries moved to
the area and helped make La Crosse the city it is
today. - While the industries helped La Crosse become a
popular spot, what also brought people to this
area was the natural landscapes and wildlife. - Thats why this area is affectionately known as
