What are Gargoyles?

• Gargoyles were a Medieval invention.
• They encouraged water to run off buildings, like
  gutters on a house.
• They can be seen from all angles and on the
  corners of Churches and Cathedrals.
• People were superstitious in Medieval times and
  used these creatures to warn evil spirits away.

The gargoyles of the cathedral of Notre Dame in
Paris are sculpted in fantasy-like Gothic forms.
These stone monsters date back to a period
between 1163, the year of the founding of the
cathedral, and the first half of the 13th
century.
