reasons why different cultures wear them. Here
are ideas to help you decide what type of mask
you would like to make
TRIBAL MASKS
3Why do you think different cultures wear masks?
- Since ancient times masks have been worn for a
number of reasons - As part of Dance Ceremonies
- Story telling
- Hiding the wearers identity
Masks have the ability to conceal, change, or
transform the 'person' behind the image into
something or someone else. Masks can be playful
or powerful and they are worn for many reasons
including rituals, religion, and myth.
4- Many Tribes believe that when a person wears an
animal mask, they share some of the creatures
power.

12You can make a half face. Maybe with a long nose
or decorative head dress.
13Gargoyle style Masks
Do you Know what a Gargoyle is?
A waterspout, usually in the form of an ugly
creature, sticking out from the gutter of a
building.
14 - Gargoyles are mythological beings. They adorn
countless cathedrals around the world. Early
references date back to 600A.D.
15 - The gargoyle was a protection against evil, its
grotesque form frightened away evil spirits and
protected the church.
16Can you guess where the word Gargoyle comes from?
Clue- It sounds like something you do after you
have brushed your teeth!
It originates from a French word Gargouille,
meaning throat.
17- A Mythological carving often to be found in and
around churches is the green man. It is a mans
head surrounded by leaves.

20 21 You could create an ugly Gargoyle mask and paint
it or spray it grey and silver colours Like this
one!
22You could make a mask influenced by a
mythological creature!
Gorgons
23The GORGON is an imaginary creature. The Greeks
believed she was a hideous monster who was
magical and very evil.
24The CYCLOPS is an imaginary one-eyed giant.
