Title: ESL Summer School

1
ESL Summer School
  • Program goals and curriculum outline 2008

2
Introduction
  • The goal of this program is to prepare ESL
students for success as they transition into the
mainstream High School programs of study
  • Ruamrudees summer school program helps students
prepare for life with a sense of intellectual
    independence and commitment to community

3
Topics of Discussion
  • How this program is different from previous years
  • Expectations of the program and responsibilities
    of the students
  • Proposed curricular strands and modules of
    learning
  • Assessment and reporting
  • Support materials for parents and intending
    students

4
Developments and Expectations
  • After reflective evaluation of the programs
offered over the previous two years, it was felt
that the learning experiences offered in summer
school were too narrow. The focus of summer
school 08 is on developing the whole student
empowering them with a wider range of skills that
will enable them to successfully navigate regular
classes in the next academic year. We hope the
new initiatives and modules of work approach will
actively engage students in learning and building
confidence in the use of English the target
    language.

5
Developments and Expectations
  • With a wider range of opportunities to use the
target language both inside and outside the
classroom it is hoped that participating students
will appreciate the value of summer school in
building their vocabulary, reading and writing
skills, and confidence in oral presentations and
social interactions. The goal is also to
introduce students to the wider community service
goals of RIS and actively participate in these
    activities.

6
Developments and Expectations
  • Every opportunity will be given to students to
develop appropriate skills. It is the commitment
and energy of the students themselves that will
determine their level of attainment and success.
Students are required to complete all modules of
    work within the program.

7
Modules of Learning
  • One of the advantages of RIS summer school is the
teacher to student ratio, allowing close
attention to be paid to the learning expectations
and requirements of individual students. The
teaching faculty for summer school are fully
    qualified and experienced teachers.

8
Modules of Learning
  • There are a number of curriculum strands within
the modules of learning that link to work
students will do when they enter the High School
so they will feel prepared and more confident
in dealing with the challenge ahead.

9
Modules of Learning
  • Attendance is mandatory to all parts of the
summer school program. You will receive
personalized feedback in the form of a written
report that will comment on both performance and
attainment in all learning modules. Those
students who do not meet minimum required
standards will be identified and progress reports
will be sent home and forwarded to Pupil Services
    at RIS.
