What?

• What is the mission in Liberia about? After a
  complete breakdown of law and order, and
  displacement of 850,000 citizen, A group called
  the Economic Community of West Africa States
  (ECOWAS) decided to make a peace settlement. The
  UN agreed to the proposition towards ending the
  civil war. These efforts were started in 1990,
  with an arms embargo to Liberia.
• In 1997 a new government was elected and
  announced national unity, which to them and the
  UN means the end of a Civil war.
• In 2003 how ever, a new war began in Liberia
  because of abusing human rights, and harassment
  in politics led to another civil war. To prevent
  this, the countries government started a three
  step program. However, one of the steps was to
  terminate the mandate for the UNOL project. Since
  this time, the events has rapidly developed into
  a worse situation. The country adopted resolution
  1497 which would have soldiers ready to deploy if
  it was ever needed.

Who?

• Who is involved in the war? It is civil, so most
  of the 150,000 dead are civilians. There are also
  850,000 refugees in and around their home country
  of Liberia.
• In 2003 the UN voted to send in 15,000 workers
  which include 250 military observers, 160
  officers, around 875 UN police officers, and a
  large number of armed units.

When?

• UNMIL was established by the security council on
  the 19th of September, 2003.
• Fighting began 1989.
• By early 1990 several hundreds of deaths had
  already occurred between government forces and
  fighters who claimed membership in an opposition
  group.
• The opposition group was called the National
  Patriotic Front of Liberia, (NPFL).

Where?
UNMIL takes place in Liberia, Africa.

Why?

• The war started because government forces and
  fighters who claimed membership in the NPFL
  (National Patriotic Front of Liberia).
• The united nations are there for peace keeping
  because there has been so much war there.
• The ECOWAS first made the treaty because there
  were so many murders.
