Social Networking

Social Networking
  • Web has become teenagers virtual hangout
  • Place to go online after school or at night and
connect with their friends away from the parents.
  • Hanging out - It is how youth get socialized
into peer groups. Builds relationships and stay
connected. Culture, fashion, music, and media.

3
My parents actually know nothing of MySpace. If
they do, they dont know that I have it. I dont
want to share this with them because I want to
have my own privacy. Im sick of adults NEVER
trusting teens
4
I keep in touch with my friends via MySpace
because I just moved away. Its more effective
than calling them.
5
My parents look at it all the time to see who Im
actually talking to. Actually my dad does and
tells my mom. They read my stuff and look at
what my friends write. They have said to be
careful who I talk to.
6
I dont know the difference between sarcasm and
anger because the Internet is so impersonal.
7
Normally, you cant access it from my schools
computers. It is blocked under Tasteless or
Web Chat or something of that sort. I however,
can access the site, because I know way around my
schools firewall. But thats just me

  • Most teens are quite particular about whom they
will add and whom they will reject.
  • The size of ones Friends List is also a major
factor in determining ones popularity, both
    online and off.

10
Social Networking Safety
  • Dont forget that your profile and forums are
    public spaces.

person look bad or places that person in
    potential danger.

Dealing with Cyber Bullying
  • Express the anger in private or at home just
dont let the bully or bullies know that theyve
hurt you or made you angry.
  • Ignore, ignore, ignore. Doing so will
communicate to the bully that you just dont
care. Sooner or later, the bully will get bored
    and move on.
  • Walk tall and proud at school and participate in
class more than ever. Demonstrate that you are
    unfazed by the attacks.
  • Feel sympathy for your bully. They are probably
    a jealous or unhappy person
  • Talk about it. Encourage your child or student
to tell you, teachers, school counselors, and
    administrators.

17
Positive Uses of Social Networking
  • del.icio.us (http//del.icio.us/) is a great tool
for collecting and publishing resource lists.

18
Positive Uses of Social Networking
  • Blogging - Teens have been a major force behind
    the success of blogging software.
  • Blogs give teens an audience, a way to keep up
with friends, opportunities for feedback, and a
    means to connect to others.
  • Blogs in the Classroom Example

19
Positive Uses of Social Networking
  • It can be done in a library.
  • Is banning the answer?
  • How effective are libraries going to be to
empower teens in making good online choices if
the tools to do so can't be used, accessed, or
    played with in a library?

20
Positive Uses of Social Networking

design clothes, bring their favorite story scene

Positive Uses of Social Networking
  • YouTube
  • Where teens can feel empowered by publishing work
they've done and seeing what their peers can do.
  • A resource that highlights constructive use of
    time through video creation.
  • An outlet for creative expression.
  • A place to learn, in entertaining and creative
    ways, how libraries work.

23
Positive Uses of Social Networking
  • Youth Participation
  • Teens can setup and maintain the library's
MySpace space. As a part of the process teens
would have to figure out who is responsible for
what aspects of the space, what to include on the
space, and how to add and respond to friends and
    comments.
  • Teens maintain a library blog of reviews, news,
etc. Teens who work on the project would have to
figure out what to write about on the blog, how
often to post, setup a schedule of posts, and
make sure the blog was updated on a regular
    basis.
