2
Overview
  • Problem Statement
  • Background Information
  • Summary of Design Requirements
  • Design Alternatives
  • Future Work

3
Problem Statement
  • A prototype was built in a past semester to
measure the size and compliance of esophageal
strictures. The current goal is to make
improvements to the prototypes design and
develop a device that models the esophagus to
allow for proper testing of the prototype .

4
Background Information
  • An esophageal stricture is a buildup of scar
tissue that reduces the diameter of esophagus
  • Strictures often caused by acid reflux.
  • Severe strictures require dilation, or stretching
    out of the tissue.
  • The most common dilation method is balloon
dilation done in conjunction with an endoscopy.

5
Background Information
6
Current Prototype
7
Proposed Improvements
  • Better setup ? current design is not practical
    for the medical environment
  • Reduce size
  • Reduce amount of force required to inflate
    balloon
  • Possibly find a new way to monitor volume
    displaced

8
Design One
  • Replaces syringe with a water pump-pumps constant
    volume per unit time
  • Device would be turned on by the medical
personnel-inflation of balloon would be passive.
  • Pressure vs. Time proportional to Pressure vs.
    Volume

9
Design Two
  • Utilizes a flow meter (example orifice meter) to
    monitor volume displaced
  • Based on Bournoullis Principal of XXXXXXX.

10
Design Three
  • Based on gun already used in dilation procedure
  • Volume would be derived from P1V1P2V2
