Title: 5th Grade

1
5th Grade
  • Visual Art

2
Elements of Art for 5th Grade with
definitions
  • Blind Contour Line
  • Line Design
  • Abstract

3
Blind Contour Line a method of drawing where
the observer looks only at the subject while
drawing, making sure to use one continuous
descriptive line.
4
Line Design repetitive organic and geometric
lines making patterns
5
Abstract art that is distorted or emphasizes
non- recognizable objects
  • Artist Robin Janning

Artist Taetzsch
6
Identify Experience
  • Label, list, name, define, relate, recall and use
    art making tools

7
  • Practice no peeking blind contour line
drawings of the students shoe or any object from
environment. You could give the students a
styrofoam plate to place over their pencil or
    marker to prevent peeking.

8
  • Blind contour is about drawing exactly
what we see not what our brain may be telling
us to hurry up and draw.
  • Blind contour drawing forces us to observe
the outside edge of the object very closely.
This exercise helps an artist draw that extra
detail more accurately. Also, it's always
encouraging to see how well you can draw
something, even if you have to trick your brain
    to do it!

9
Blind contour is not supposed to be a correct
proportional drawing. The stranger it looks, the
better. The important thing to do is to train
your eye to draw what you really see.
10
  • When attempting a blind contour line
drawing, use continuous line while moving from
    one area to the next.

11
  • Hand blind contour

12
Attempt blind contour line drawings of
classmates or a group of still-life objects.
13
  • It may be fun to add cut out magazine images
of lips, eyes, ears, to your blind contour
portraits to make them more interesting. Dont
add too much. In design, less is more.

14
Explore Contextualize
  • Discover, look at, investigate, experience and
    form ideas.

15
Discuss why distortion is important in creating.
Find other ways artists use distorted lines to
make exaggerations.
16
Do you see the distortion and exaggerations.
17
Recognize visual distortion used by cartoonists
and abstract artists. Artwork by James C.
Christensen

19
Abstracts can be a form of exaggeration and
distortion.

20
Build Skills Practice
  • Apply, construct, demonstrate, illustrate,
    evaluate and practice

21
Line Design
  • repetitive organic and geometric lines making
    patterns

22
Organic line design organic shapes are found in
nature and cannot be identified as geometric
shapes by name.
23
Geometric patterns describes shapes and forms
such as squares, circles, cubes, and spheres etc.
24
Can you tell which is the organic pattern and
which is the geometric pattern design?
25
Can you see how the line designs adds interest
to this art piece.
26
This Abstract is a good example of line design
Artist Elizabeth Urabe. The piece is entitled
Perfection in Imperfection
27
  • Try making some line designs and place
    organic and geometric patterns inside.

28
Cut then out and hang them up.
29
Analyze Integrate
  • Compare, contrast, distinguish, examine and
    incorporate

30
  • Compare two drawings of the same subject. The
first drawing using typical contour line, looking
back and forth while drawing (peeking) and the
second a blind contour (not peeking) only looking
at what you are drawing and not looking down.
    Which drawing is more interesting?

31
Research Create
  • Study, explore, seek, be creative, imagine and
    produce

32
Use blind contour drawings as a means to create
exaggerations and distortions in facial features,
self-portraits or cartoon characters.
33
  • Research different periods of US History,
find political cartoons or social statements
    about one of those periods.

34
Cartoons are a good way to make political
statements, it gets the point across without
being too offensive.
35
Refine Contribute
  • Show skill mastery for
  • grade level, give
  • opinions, support
  • others, and show art

36
Try drawing a cartoon or exaggerate something
from life. You could add a story about your
drawing.
37
Create a cartoon figure or a distorted work of
art.
38
A distorted work of art
39
Appreciate the lack of proportional realism in
other students artwork. Stand up and walk around
the room to observe what others have done.
Respect the work of others by making positive
comments.
40
After exploring ideas write a story around one of
your best characters you have illustrated. Use
descriptive words and make an illustrated picture
book.
  • The next slide is an example of an accordion fold
book. The cover is made from a filing folder.
The file folder has been covered with paper with
the main character of the story glued to the
    cover.
