Title: Forest Management and Wood Supply

Forest Management and Wood Supply
2
Logging
  • Clear Cutting
  • Is the practice of cutting down trees, then
cutting out their central boles (the clear trunk
or central stem) and possibly branches in order
to use the wood as an economic resource or to
clear forest land for conversion to another use.
  • Standing trees viewed as a potential economic
    resources are termed timber.

3
Methods and Harvest
  • Methods Of Harvest
  • Clear-cutting
  • the most common and most criticized method of
    timber harvest in industrial operations.
  • this essentially removes all the trees in a
    selected area.

4
Clear Cutting
  • Clear Cutting
  • Clear cutting is also the most economically-effici
ent way to remove timber but treatment following
a clear cut can lead to higher costs.
  • Large poorly planned clear cuts are far more
destructive than cuts that take into
    consideration natural topography, and bioregions.

5
Clear Cutting
  • Clear Cutting
  • The effects of sustainable ecology can mimic the
effects of a forest fire or other natural
    disturbance.
  • Many different species can take longer or not
regenerate for long periods of time after such a
    occurrence.

6
Selection Harvesting
  • Selective Harvesting
  • This is the other type of method used in forest
    harvesting.
  • Selection cutting is the practice of removing
mature timber or thinning to improve the timber
    stand.
  • This system is used to maintain uneven-aged
stands to protect soils and to maintain wildlife
    habitat.

7
Selection Harvesting
  • Selective Harvesting
  • A particular type of selective cutting that
targets only the highest-quality timber of
    certain species is termed High-Grading
  • Specific trees are chosen for harvest and others
    left to mature.
  • The final product of a selective harvest allows
more light to pass through the canopy. This
generates a more productive under-story which
creates a diverse wildlife habitat and higher
    quality timber.

Over-story Cut
  • Overstory Cut
  • Over-story removal or shelter wood cutting is a
    variation of select cutting.
  • In this method all the large trees are taken and
the under-story of saplings and smaller trees are
    left for regeneration.
  • Over-story removal requires care be used to avoid
    residual stand damage.

Maine Timber Supply
  • timber inventories remain adequate to support
current harvest levels for the next 50 years.
  • growth is projected to be less than current
harvest levels. The long-term imbalance between
growth and harvest is cause for concern and does
    not indicate sustainable forest management.
  • The report summarizes that current forest
management activities are capable of sustaining
    86 of current harvest levels.

12
Harvest Time !!!
  • Harvest Time
  • Winter is the prime logging season in the
Northeast because the ground is frozen and heavy
machinery can get into the woods without causing
    much damage to the soil.

13
Riparian Buffer zones
  • Riparian Buffer Zones
  • While avoiding damage to the soil loggers also
want to protect waterways. Riparian buffer zones
are made up of trees and shrubs. They are left
standing along logging roads near waterways to
    help prevent harmful runoff.

14
2005 / 2006 harvest
  • This winter, the ground never froze. Heavy rains
in October and November, followed by unseasonably
warm weather in December and January have made
this one of the worst timber harvest seasons
    anyone can remember.

Got Wood?
  • Got Wood ???
  • What are some of the general uses of wood and
    processed timber in maine ?
  • What are the benefits of using in state logged
    timber?
